Going strong

May 9, 2012/Ryan

When I said I’d post later this evening I didn’t think it would be a few minutes past midnight, but I suppose better late than never.

Ryan this morning waiting to be extubated

Ryan was taken off the ventilator about 1:30 p.m. and is still going strong. His vitals are super-duper with o2 sats in the high 70s and low 80s pretty consistently. He’s still loopy as they wean him off anti-anxiety and sedations meds that replaced the heavy sedation meds he was on for the vent. This is how he looked at me the entire time I was playing peek-a-boo with him this afternoon. He finally gave me a fake smile then went back to staring at me like I’m an idiot.
His vocal chords are swollen from the vent so he sounds like a young Darth Vader. It’s incredibly endearing. Probably the cutest thing today was when I was asking him what he wanted. He growled a word over and over, and for the life of me, I couldn’t understand it. Finally he brought both his splinted hands to his cheeks and signed the word “kitty.”  I reached for his new stuffed dog and said, “Kitty?”   He nodded really big and grabbed for it.  I mentioned the drugs, right?

The biggest issue is still H2O. We’re letting him drink about an ounce at a time.  It’s proving to be inadequate. The boy is insatiable. Hopefully we’ll be able to let him eat tomorrow.

McKenna (my four year old) and I just sat here and looked at pictures of Ryan and prayed for him. She also wanted to pray for Ryan’s sisters, so we did that too.
