Cinnamon Ornaments

December 24, 2010/Holidays

On Tuesday we made cinnamon ornaments. I was feeling flighty on Tuesday evening so I wasn’t really that into making the ornaments, but it was on the list. And we know I follow the list. So, we made ornaments.

Take 4.5 or so ounces of cinnamon and add 3/4 cup of applesauce.

Stir.

Add cinnamon or applesauce as needed for consistency.

I thought getting the right consistency was tricky. One minute the dough was super moist and then next crumbly. I finally left it crumbly and hoped for the best.

We gathered it into a ball as best we could and flopped it onto foil (I ran out of wax paper making peanut clusters last week!)

Here’s a good look at it…

Then we rolled it out. And lo-and-behold, as I rolled, the crumbly mess came together into a cookie dough consistency. Whoop, whoop!

Then came pressing the shapes – first we did large shapes, but quickly switched to mini ones when I realized I couldn’t get the dough off the counter without breaking the shapes. Agh! My spatula wasn’t doing the trick. But as soon as we switched sizes, I my spatula was in control again.

We used a straw to poke holes in the large ones and a skewer to make holes in the mini ones.

I forgot to look up the directions for the next step, but I knew they were to go into a 200 degree (f) oven, so I put them in and forgot them for about 3 hours. They felt done, so I turned the oven off and let them cool.

Ryan asking for an ornament to eat.

The next morning, we strung the ornaments with cross-stitch floss. “I can do this because I’ve threaded a needle afore, mommy.” Natalie informed me.

“I can do it too.” Ainsley said. I was surprised when she actually did.

The girls were so excited to hang their homemade ornaments.

Ainsley’s turn.

Verdict: The girls like this activity more than I did. I almost resolved not to do it again until I realized how much they looked forward to stringing and hanging them. Ainsley talked about the ornaments for two days straight. And Natalie is very proud of them too. The best thing about them is they make your house smell amazing.

Totally stealing this one for next years list of things to do!!! My Aunt made these with her kids when we were little and it always made me jealous, now I know how thanks to you!
Did you know you can hang them from a lamp switch and the heat from the lamp keeps the smell wafting in the air?
