Henry and I were able to sneak away for a day while on our family vacation in Mexico. We headed down the road to Tulum, the ruins of Mayan walled city on the coast line.

They too had an impressive temple with a calendar aspect, much like the temple at Chichen Itza.
The iguanas love sunning themselves on the ancient rocks.
And it’s hard to beat the view.
It’s hard for me to think of the natives setting up elaborate cities…. these people were much different than the culture of native americans who were nomadic hunters and gatherers that I’m used to studying about in school.
Tulum was a major trading port along the east coast where other tribes came to trade their wares. Their buildings are impressive and obviously well-built to last through the centuries.

They were so advanced they used paper money that came out of machines….

Okay, I’m kidding. I couldn’t help myself.
After touring the ruins, we hooked up with a local guide who took us snorkeling in a local cenote. It was strange to snorkel among stalagmites and stalactites and it’s interesting how I never remember I’m claustrophobic until I’m in situations that give me panic attacks (such as snorkeling in dark caves). I have no pictures of the cave snorkeling because there wasn’t a good spot to leave my camera and I didn’t want to get it wet. For those curious, there were very little fish in the cave since nothing grows in the dark for them to eat…. the draw of the cave was being able to see the stalagmites and stalactites and freaking yourself out in tight, small, dark places.
However after the cave snorkeling, the same local guide took us to a nearby lagoon where we snorkeled in the open air and I was able to relax while gazing at parrot fish and barracuda. Oh yeah, he warned us there may be a nurse shark or two on the ocean side of the lagoon and although at one point when Henry’s flipper stirred up some major dust I thought there just might be a shark companion with us, we did not encounter any.

The water is so clear I took these photos of the fish from above the water.

We ended the day on the beach in Playa del Carmen, listening to the waves, a local band and cuddling to ward off the breeze. It was perfect.

How totally awesome that you two got to spend such a great day together!!! I’m sure you needed that closeness after all the stresses of life you both face daily. The pics are beautiful! I hope that I can go there someday. Thanks for sharing!

Sounds like yah’ll made some good memories on this trip. I give you props on the cave thing that would send me into a panic just at the mere thought of doing it. I am not a fan of tight spaces.
