Recalibrating

March 16, 2012/House

Wednesday was a bit of a bummer. Since moving into this house I’ve dreamed of turning our laundry room into a mudroom. It’s an incredibly disfunctional room to begin with.

Imagine a dryer where that hole is under the far cabinet and a utility sink by the washer in the foreground. It’s tiny and it feels tiny.
As soon as we looked at the house I thought, “Stackable washer and dryer in the alcove with mudroom-type area on the right. Perfecto.” Pinterest gave me lots of ideas to go off of…
Like this one from Better Homes and Gardens – without one of the side shelves.

Add a mudroom at your entry.

Or this one from Kristen at My Uncommon Slice of Suburbia – My laundry room doesn’t have windows. I love how bright Kristen’s mudroom is.

So I had a plumber come in this week to move the water lines for the washer. After opening up the four walls he called me in and showed me why he can’t move the waterlines. Can’t? Sorry, I don’t understand that word. So he said it again slowly. C A N ‘ T. Oh, gotcha. I see. We brainstormed trying to think of a way to make my dream laundry/mud room a reality, but in the end, it just isn’t going to happen.

I know in the scheme of things it’s not a big deal. A nothing. A total first world problem. But I was so looking forward to the functionality of having somewhere for the girls to store their school bags and winter gear. I grieved for a day then moved on to thinking about how I can convert the front coat closet into something more functional. And trying to think how I can lighten up the laundry room so it’s at least pretty in its disfunction.

I’m not sure why he can’t but could you not run a water line on the outside of the walls. My guess is there’s some heating duct or pipes, inside the walls, in the way….could you use a flexible hose along the baseboard perhaps. It might not be hidden but it will let you fulfill your dream. There’s ALWAYS a way!!!

I can’t really tell if this would work from the pictures, but can’t you reverse your initial idea and put the stackables where the washer is and have the dryer area be your “kid stuff” area? I know it wouldn’t be as convenient (since the kids area would be at the back of the room), but you could still have 2 uses for that room. Just a thought. Of course, assuming that you could move the dryer vent lines.
