New Take on Ladies’ Night Out

April 30, 2010/Health

“Hey, what are you doing?” my friend asked.

“Putting the kids to bed. What’s up?” I said.
“Jason kicked me out of the house. You wanna go to hot yoga with me?” she said breathlessly.
Anyone who knows what it’s like to have little kids knows the opportunity to get out of putting the kids to bed comes with the feeling of just having won the lottery. I calmly put the book down I was reading to the girls and headed down the steps. I met Henry coming out of the kitchen, his dinner in one hand and his glass of tea in the other.
“Do you care if I go to hot yoga with Bridget? You’d have to put the kids to bed, give Ryan his 8 o’clock meds and start his feeds in a half hour.” I said excitedly.
I’m not going to lie. He looked a little shell-shocked. He’d been home only a few minutes and literally answering the phone (for me) was the second thing he did after walking in the door.
“Can I eat my dinner first?” was his reply. (Have I mentioned how awesome this man is and how much I love him?)
“Yep… don’t care…. no school tomorrow!” I said running to my dresser for clothes. “What are you wearing?” I said to Bridget who was still waiting for my answer on the other end of the line. Yes – I seriously asked what she was wearing to yoga. I’m not sure why. But I did. And she told me.
“Capri sweats and a t-shirt. It’s hot yoga. Just put something on and call me from the car.” she said.
You know I called her from the car, giddy at having just left my two kids NOT IN BED YET and my son sleeping on the living room floor. We talked the entire 10 minute drive and the entire two minutes it took me to walk from the parking lot to the front of the building to take a picture of her and the sign. And then we yelled across the street after hanging up and the entire walk up to the studio. Oh, and then we got reprimanded for talking in class. Yes, yes we did. Which reminds me I used to get in trouble for talking in Mr. Becker’s history class with Johnny Grove. But back to hot yoga.
For those who don’t know about hot yoga – don’t feel bad I didn’t know about it either until recently – it’s a yoga class that takes place in a very hot room – like 90 degrees or something ridiculous like that. I think the idea is the warmer your muscles, the more you can stretch them. Oh and the more you sweat. Some people like to sweat. I can take it or leave it.
I got to yoga dressed in workout clothes armed with two water bottles and a camera. I forgot the water bottles in the car…. but of course remembered the camera. Because you know, a camera is not really allowed in exercise classes and water bottles are so I had my priorities straight.
I also forgot my yoga mat. I have one. A nice bright pink one my husband bought for me when we were doing P90X. But I’m not used to going to exercise classes and I’m certainly not used to dragging something along… as evidenced by the two water bottles left sitting in my car while I was inside becoming dehydrated in a 90 degree yoga studio. (okay, really I drank 3/4 of Bridget’s bottle of water while she wasn’t looking) Bridget had my back though. Or rather her husband did since we stole $4 worth of quarters from his highly organized coin collector in his car to rent yoga mats.
I’m sure you are all wondering about the class and how I did and all. I did fine. I was thankful that Tony taught me most the names of the yoga moves so I didn’t feel like a fool. There were only one or two we hadn’t done in P90X so I could spend the time trying to relax while folded up like a pretzel or sprawled out like a tree instead of frantically trying to figure out what an ashtanga, utkatasana, chaturanga, or vrksasana look like.
The class helped clear my head, steady my breathing and generally feel tender in every single muscle the following day. It’s good to feel sore in every single muscle because then you realize you actually have muscle under all the, eh-hem, chub.
What spontaneous thing did you do this week?

Mine is not nearly as exciting as ur’s. Although I have never tried yoga and keep telling myself it is something I will try next week. Let’s see this week is week 10 of saying that. On with my story, I decided on tuesday that I had plenty of time, so my two kids (ages 5 & 2) and I would walk the 8 blocks to our city’s downtown (we live in a small city with 15,000 people). 2 blocks into the walk I realized that 2 of my tires on my running stroller were flat and my daughters bike tires weren’t so great. So 4 blocks out of the way to the gas station, then back on track. Post office here we came, then the candy store for a reward, then to the retirement center two blocks away to eat our snack on their benches out side. Next the pet shop, now to the reason for the walk, doctor visits/checkup for both the kids. They loved it. Well all the stuff except for that doctor thing. Its a good thing I gave us 2 hours to get to those doctors appointments. You just never know how well a 5 year on a bike will hold up. She did great so we got to do the fun things like the pet shop and candy store:) that’s as exciting as it gets for me.

I drove to a new Target it’s about 20 mins. away, stopped at a new Goodwill (for me) and got some paint chips from a local paint store. Hey getting 3 girls and my pregnant self in the car is a big deal! We even made it home in time for lunch.
So it was a ALL GIRLS DAY OUT 2 years and up. ; -)

Leighann, this reminds me of high school too when you would hold on to the banister in the hall and Mandy and I would stretch your legs because you thought it would make you look taller, hehe 🙂

I am tickled you had so much fun you deserve it. Geetting ready to do our transfer has sucked the spontaneous right out of my vocabulary. Top that off with the cherry of daddy going on “travel” for a month has ended any chance of mommy time, I wonder how early all the kids can go down at night LOL…
