Catheritization update

April 15, 2009/Ryan

So I was right about the doctor’s concerns this morning. I just got an update from Ryan’s cath and the attending said that things went ‘better than expected and better than anyone could’ve imagined.’ Reminds me of Eph. 3:20 – look it up sometime if you aren’t familiar with it.

There were two possible issues causing Ryan’s downturn – his shunt could’ve had a clot causing restricted flow, or the membrane restriction was causing oxygenated blood to back up into his lungs instead of going out to his body. He was very blue!

When there is high pressure in the lungs (as was Ryan’s case this morning), the blood vessels constrict. Further, when the patient is stressed, the vessels constrict even more making the doctors think the cath would not be possible. They were fully expecting to tell me we would instead be going into an emergency heart surgery. Thankfully, Dr. K was able to get the catheter and wires in the places they needed to be. He also was able to use a cath balloon with little razor blades on it to perforate the membrane and another balloon to then open up the perforations causing the membrane to dilate to an acceptable size for blood to flow freely.

They’ve never used the cath lab to do this procedure on this type of membrane so we are thankful that the procedure went as planned and Ryan was able to tolerate everything. They also checked Ryan’s shunt and it is functioning well with no clots.

Thank you for your prayers. Both with his shunt surgery and this cath, the doctors were expecting the worst… but Ryan continues to beat the odds.

Praise the Lord for “better than expected” results. I am glad we have a God who guides the drs’ hands and shocks us humans. God is Good!! Thank you for sharing the ups, downs and miracles in Ryan’s life. We will continue to pray for you and Ryan everyday.

I was out of town over nioght and had no access to the onternet– so weird! I kept praying and just got home to check on Ryan and see what has transpired in the last 24 hours! I literally have carried one of your posts with me for a couple of days and just prayed over it again and again. The baby got it this morning as we were leaving the hotel and I told him he had to pray if he was going ot hold it, so we did. I am sorry for all the highs and lows but I clearly see the Lord sustaining you and working in Ryan’s life… he is a miracle!
