The day the grill drove us crazy and other ordinary things

October 7, 2013/Family

We had another full weekend. Family movie night, soccer, a birthday party, play dates, a cook-out with another family which involved running out of propane for the grill, preheating the oven, deciding to get more gas, guys running out for gas, electricity going out in a storm, kids screaming and laughing, burning candles, guys showing up with propane only to have grill act up, electricity coming back on and preheating oven (again), grill firing up finally, a quiet adult dinner while kids played in basement b/c their hot dogs took a NY minute while our chicken took all night to cook on the grill/oven.

We found out the secret to good grilled chicken is to let it rest when it’s cooked half way to let the juices really soak, then trick it in the oven, then finish it on the grill. Seriously. Cooking is an art, not a science. We also figured out if you make your guests really, really hungry, they’ll like anything. Even chicken that took an hour to cook on the grill.

The kids wanted to decorate for fall on Sunday evening so we set about putting out pumpkins, bats, mice, turkeys and leaf garland. We also came up with a front door decoration the girls loved. We (I) made it out of construction paper (if you look through the left windows you can see our “mice” playing on the stairs). Our door has the slightest overhang so I’m a little worried a huge storm will wet our pumpkin. But it looks fun and the girls were truly excited about it.

As if I didn’t have enough on my plate Sunday night (finish up plan B for a girl scout meeting due to rain forecast for today, a girl scout planning meeting this morning with my co-leaders, putting kids to bed, etc, etc, etc, I also had to get ready for Ryan’s week of being Star of the Week at preschool. We did not have this in Virginia. This school district does it in preschool through elementary. (I have no idea the grades beyond this). Basically the mom has to make a poster about the kid, come in and read a story to the class, and the kid can take in a favorite toy or book or something. I suppose it makes the kids feel special, but honestly it’s just one more thing I have to plan out (who prints pictures anymore?)  Poor Ryan’s poster is a piece of construction paper. It’s what I had on hand.  It’ll do.

And finally – a win for the Pirates! Hoping for another big W today.

Whew! We played hard so now it’s time to rest during the week by going to work and school.

P.S.  – if you have any magazines you’d like to order or renew, please consider doing so through Natalie’s or Ainsley’s Girl Scout troop. You can go here…. http://girlscouts.qspgao.com/Store/Storefront?t=2eaafec0-1f04-4598-9d22-d30bbc24e366

I believe that automatically takes you to Natalie’s link. If you want to order from Ainsley, click on Natalie’s name and choose “Add a girl scout”. It will ask for an ID. Ainsley’s is 22RYBMW. If you need Natalie’s it’s 22RYBFB. Thanks a bunch!
