I’m not sure where I picked up this cleaning tip – probably Fly Lady when the Internet was just becoming the home of blogs – but when I’m cleaning I carry a laundry basket around with me and put all the things that don’t belong in a room into it.
As I move from room to room, I move things out of the basket and in, limiting my trips back and forth between rooms cutting down on the time it takes to put things away.
Do you have a quick cleaning tip that works for you?
P.S. Johanna – since I will probably forget to call – “Happy Anniversary!”
Yes, its called Older kids. I tell an older child to go put said item away and if I find it on the floor in their room I get their game players for a week and so far it works.
My teen tried to beat the sysytem. His “game” turned into all electronics, no tv, ipod you get the idea….he does a fantastic job now
This is a nifty little trick because I am forever trotting from one end of the house to the other with my hands {and arms} overflowing. I shall remember this! Thanks for sharing Leighann. 😀
I used to do that too. And I would put one at the foot of the stairs to collect things so that I would only have to make one trip upstairs to put things away up there.
One thing that speeds up dishes (whatever you have to hand wash) is to make essentially an assembly line. Instead of washing something, then rinsing it, then moving on the next piece washing and rinsing, washing and rinsing, esp with the water just running and running…
Fill just a little bit of soapy water (preferably in a small tub instead of the sink), wash each piece in that quickly and set it aside, then when you are done soaping them up, rinse them all in a row. It is much faster and saves water!
And if you want to save even MORE water (and space), you can actually put detergent and water into a cup and dip the sponge in that instead of using a washtub. It seriously works and saves lots of water.
Also, I read an article one time about how to clean in the tiny snatches of time you have. One of the good suggestions I remember was to do things that literally only take a few moments, but if you wait to do them all together it “takes too much time” – the best example was wiping down the sink, which takes literally seconds, and makes the bathroom look instantly cleaner. So if you are using the bathroom anyway, go ahead and wipe the sink down while you’re in there. It’s faster than making a separate trip to the room later just for cleaning – over time, less trips add up!
Another tip was to be sure to make the bed as soon as you get out of it, instead of waiting (or not doing it at all) bc it makes you inspired to keep the rest of the bedroom picked up. It does help! 🙂

Great, great, great tip. Thank you!!
I try (operative word is try) to never go up or down the stairs without taking something with me.

Thanks for sharing that idea! So simple and creative…one of those, “Why have I never thought of that?” things. Such a time saver!
when I do laundry, i use baskets for each person, or room. that way I only have to carry one basket to each room
