Easy Paper Heart Garland

January 27, 2012/DIY
I don’t know how many of you are on Pinterest, but I’m hooked. For those who don’t know what it is, it’s an online idea board where you can pin things you see on the internet. It’s an electronic version of all those idea and recipe books I’ve been keeping for years…. years I tell you. It’s so nice to have it paperless and accessible from anywhere. ANYWHERE! Whew, this is an organized-crazy-person’s dream.

It’s also a fun place to follow what your friends are pinning…. yes, there’s now another way to stalk people. Oh the joys of the internet.
The black lining of all this pinning is that sometimes too much inspiration can have the opposite affect and become overwhelming. And paralyzing. With all the pinning in the world to do, who has time to actually do anything?
The time has come for me to start doing some of the projects I’ve pinned. And of course I’m going to share it with you. (and as a confession, I actually don’t remember where I saw this… I scanned my Pinterest folders and can’t find it, so I can’t site the source – agh!) But I think I remember how she did it.
Here’s an easy heart garland just in time for Valentine’s Day.
1. Take a book you’ve already read or no longer need (or buy one from the thrift store because you love all the books you own and don’t want to rip them up. And don’t ask me why it took me a very long time to decide which book to buy and rip up… I couldn’t get just anything… the words are going to be displayed in my house afterall).

2. Measure the place you’d like to hang your garland and divide by 2.5. Divide that number by two and cut out that many 2.5″ hearts and that many 2.5″ rectangles. (see, you do use math in everyday life)

3. Ink up the sides of the hearts if you wish. My girls wished.

We don’t have any ink pads that aren’t dried up so we used sharpies.

4. Start sewing the hearts and rectangles in a line on your sewing machine. The trick is to get them as close as possible without sewing them together.
Like sew, I mean, so…

5. Gently rip the rectangles off the thread.

You are left with hearts on a string.

6. Hang on your mantle, or around a door frame, or on your bed.

Next week I’m going to try to make another Pinterest idea. It can be a project or a recipe. Anyone want to join me? I can put up a linky button if you guys are interested… comment if you want to make it a party.

*If you aren’t on Pinterest and would like an invite, email me and I’ll send you an invitation. We can stalk each other.

I will join you! I have my eyes on a tangled pile of ear buds, and yarn to knit enclosed I cord around the wires. I want to try and do three pairs.

I’m pretty sure I saw that on pinterest. And I too am hooked. There were some days over winter break that I put in a good 5 hours or so on that site. I haven’t really tried anything yet though 🙁
