The new challenge

February 25, 2011/Ryan
Now that Ryan is no longer using his g-tube to eat, I am trying to introduce the idea that meds go in the mouth, not the tube.
Ryan hasn’t really gotten meds any other way. Us pushing ‘stuff’ through his tube is normal for him.

He loves to help out.

I push his meds and water, and he likes to pull the syringes out.

The other night I said, “Time for your meds.”
He nodded his head yes.
I said, “You want to take your meds in your mouth?” and I put the syringe up to his mouth.
He looked at me like I was a crazy lady and signed ‘no’.
Then I said, “Do you want me to put them in your tube?”
He nodded his head ‘yes’ and looked a lot more comfortable. So the new challenge is getting him transitioned to PO meds.

He is one smart cookie. I would rather take med’s thru a tube if they tasted yucky.

Its just going to take time, one tiny squirt at a time. Good to hear he is starting to transition good for him and good for you too.

maybe you could get a special candy (like m & m’s or smarties) only for meds taking and if he takes the meds by mouth, he gets a piece of candy!
That worked pretty well for potty training my own kids!
(Don’t tell the dentist I told you that. LOL)

Those jammies are sooo cute on him.

I second that Lisa. He is a smart cookie. And who wouldn’t want to have a special tube just for yucky meds?

Have you thought about letting him take some juice or water through the syringe to play/practice? He might get more comfortable with the idea if he had other things go into his mouth with the syringe.

I hope the transition goes well. Yay that he is able to take everything by mouth now! He has come such a long way!

I would put the meds on a regular spoon and give them to him by mouth that way. If they taste bad, I mix them with a little chocolate syrup on the spoon – yum!

I love the idea of putting it on a spoon! Thanks.

i agree with the spoon line of thinking! totally leave the syringe out of the deal to separate what it is you’re doing from his tube experience. use a spoon or even a children’s medicine spoon-tube thingy if he can drink from that.

    great idea!
