Ryan in his bouncy seat…

Ryan is 2 months old! Can you believe it?  It has a been a trying two months, but they really have gone by quickly. The good news is that Ryan weaned totally off of oxygen today AND moved to the Heart and Kidney Unit (HKU).

They haven’t given us a new timeframe for coming home, but I did talk to the HKU Nurse Practitioner today about his progress. He should be off his meds by week end and they will start him on bolus feeds tomorrow. He should start to have hungry periods by Friday and hopefully I can start working with him to suck and swallow (again).
The biggest thing now is his sucking and swallowing. They won’t keep him long at Children’s once he no longer needs acute medical attention. Meaning, they won’t keep him there if feeding is his only issue. They are taking it one day at a time, but if Ryan doesn’t get the hang of eating by mouth shortly, the will move him to a rehab hospital down the street called The Hospital for Sick Children. They have therapists there who work with babies on a regular basis teaching them to suck and swallow.  For various reasons, they do not send heart babies home with feeding tubes.
So, the good news is Ryan is getting better. It seems the membrane really was the issue keeping him from progressing and now that that has been taken care of, he’s off to the races.

Is the no feeding tube a hospital wide policy there or just your cardiologist? I know of countless heart kiddos who have gone home on feeding tubes. In fact, this is the first time I have ever heard of not sending them home with a feeding tube.
I am praying that Ryan will get the hang of eating very quickly.
