The oreos and chips were long gone by the time the snow stopped on Saturday afternoon. We ended up with over 30″ of snow….

That didn’t stop Henry from driving in the powdery white stuff. Here he is leaving with the girls:

We lost power at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday morning. Henry took the girls to play in the snow at a friend’s house (who had power). Ryan and I camped out at the house on his portable tanks of oxygen. I called around to make a plan A and B for contingency in case the power didn’t return in a timely manner. Thankfully the feeding pump has a battery back up that lasts 16 hours so we were okay on all fronts. The power returned at 2:30 p.m. just as I was getting ready to pack up our stuff to head out. Here is the little guy reading one of his sister’s books.
Henry arrived back home with the girls and we spent a quiet evening at home. Sunday I was in the baking mood so we made heart pies out of left over cherries from crepes that morning. I saw the idea in the February edition of Martha Stewart’s Living magazine. I’ll put the recipe at the bottom. But basically, you make your pie dough and then roll it out and cut shapes out. We used hearts, but I was very tempted to use my snowman cookie cutter. Here are our shapes:
Then you put filling in the middle of the shapes (Martha’s shapes are 4″ and she calls for 4 tsp of filling. My shapes are 2″ and 2 tsp of filling worked well. So a good ratio is 1 tsp per 1 inch of shape. I used my pampered chef scoop for even and easy measuring.)
The girls helped me top the shapes and pierce them with a fork for baking.
Bake at 350 for 40 minutes or until they are golden brown.
And then eat them with milk or hot tea!

Pear-Raspberry Heart Pies
(makes 10 4″ pies)
Martha Stewart Living Magazine
For the pastry:
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for the surface
1 tsp salt
1 tsp granulated sugar
2 sticks cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
1/3 cup plus 2 tbsp ice water
Pulse flour, salt and granulated sugar in a food processor until combined. Add butter, and pulse until mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some lager pieces remaining, about 5 seconds.
Evenly drizzle ice water over mixture. Pulse until mixture just begins to hold together, about 10 seconds. Turn out dough onto plastic wrap and wrap. Shape into a disk. Refrigerate until firm, about 1 hour or overnight.
(I don’t have a food processor – I use a pastry cutter and do this process by hand. If you don’t have a pastry cutter, you can use a fork. Once you add the water, the easiest way to mix it all together is by using your hands. Just wash them first!)
For the filling – Martha has a delicious recipe with pears and raspberries, but I used cherries. For a fruit pie filling I just use 4-6 cups of fruit, 1/2 – 3/4 c sugar depending on sweetness of fruit, and 3 tbsp flour. There are tons of fruit pie filling recipes out there so find one you like. Many of them call for lemon juice and pats of butter. I am too lazy for that!
Take dough out of the fridge and let sit for a few minutes. Roll to 1/4″ thickness and cut out shapes. Brush bottoms of pies with egg white, fill, then top with remaining dough shapes. Press the sides together making sure they are sealed. Martha did not pierce the top of hers, but I am so used to doing it so we did.
Dust the top with sugar and bake at 350 for 40 minutes. Then enjoy!
How was your weekend? Did you get snow and if so, how much?

    Wow… 30″ That’s crazy! It’s snowing here right now as I type this! 🙂

Just remember anytime you lose power call the power company and let them know you have a special needs child on oxygen and that requires a feeding pump. You will be moved to top priority on the “power outtage” list!

Our weekend was filled with LOTS of snow-shoveling . . . we got 33inches. I don’t know about your area, but we are expecting even more snow starting Tuesday. Ugh!

We got about 30 inches too….with sleet mixed in between the layers for good measure (and for hard shoveling). Looks like we will possibly have a foot more on Tuesday night. Charming! Glsd you got your power back on.

Hey! Kenny said you should call the power company and let them know you have a child hooked to oxygen and feeding machine. They will put you on a list and call you when they know about power outages due to work or something. They will keep you informed. Also like someone else said you will be top priority when the power does go out.
