Surgery Start

September 2, 2009/Ryan

They wheeled Ryan back about 5 minutes ago. They said it will probably be a 5-6 hour surgery if they are able to do everything. Everything includes putting the omphalocele inside his abdomen, patching the diaphragm, and closing in the heart. They will start with the omphalocele and diaphragm and will watch to see how his heart tolerates the new pressure of having his lower half completely closed. If he is tolerating the first stage with no problems, they will then continue with closing in his chest wall. If he is not tolerating the first stage, they will end the surgery and go back at a later date to close in the heart.

There are a lot of ‘ifs’. Please pray for wisdom for the doctors and safety for Ryan. We’ll keep you posted as we have more information.

Thoughts and prayers for you all! I found your blog about a week ago through MckMama and have read all your back post. My little man is just a few weeks older then Ryan (BD 1-23-09) and as a nurse myself I am amazed with how well he has done and pray it will continue.

Praying for Ryan right now. And the doctors I’m asking the Lord to give them swift, steady hands, clarity of thought and wisdom beyond their earthly knowledge.
