This week’s seven quick takes:
1
You guys have not convinced me to go to the dentist every six months. I refuse. In the sweetest way possible. If it gets way too bad doing the annual visit, I can always go to the dentist around here who knocks his patients out to clean their teeth. Ha!
2
We survived our first full week without the girls seeing Ryan. Natalie asked a couple times when she could see him and Ainsley cried one day and said she really wanted him to come home now. Otherwise, the girls are enjoying spending Tuesdays and Thursdays at home.
3
While I do think about Ryan those two days when I can’t see him, the silver lining is that I am able to relax a bit with the girls and get a few things done around the house. This week I pruned some hedges, cleaned out my side of the closet (I would never touch Henry’s side without his permission, for real) and organized the garage. Next week I need to get a handle on the girls’ clothes.
4
And, just to close the loop. Natalie and Ainsley were immunized against the H1N1 virus on Wednesday night. Whoo hoo! The girls will be able to visit Ryan the first week in November after building up an immunity to the virus. (mommy just breathed a huge sigh of relief)
5
Natalie turns 5 on Saturday. Huh? When did that happen?
She’s in kindergarten. She’s kissing boys… you know Parker? The kid she kissed on the lips who thought it was disgusting?  Well, he kissed her on the cheek this week. Told her he loves her and wants to marry her. Who does this kid think he is? Three weeks ago he thinks kissing is disgusting and now he’s proposing?  Hmmm, I might have to talk to his mother.
6
Just because:
Ainsley got a five minute nap in the car the other day so wasn’t tired when it was time for bed. This is what I heard coming from her room (sorry it’s dark, but the lights are out!):
And then I couldn’t resist this the other morning… I was throwing dinner in the crock pot and she was waiting to leave for school:
7
Made cupcakes for Natalie’s class and used my Aunt Karen’s icing recipe. It is the kind that you cook milk and flour on the stove until thick and then add that cooled to sugar, shortening and vanilla and mix until fluffy. It’s the stuff we grew up on and I still prefer it over store-bought.
Remember the ‘Friends’ episode where Monica spends like an entire week trying to replicate Phoebe’s grandma’s special chocolate chip cookie recipe and it ends up being the Nestle recipe on the back of the bag of chips?
Well, in honor of home cooks everywhere, what recipe was handed down to you and by whom?

HA! see, sometimes you do post more than one in a day. here i was checking your blog for the fourth time today and thinking back on our conversation earlier this week. Turns out the fourth time is the charm. 🙂 I really enjoyed spending time with you and the girls today. I am learning how to be more like mary and less like martha… and i’m totally enjoying it. i’ll tell stories to natalie and ainsley any time. it was a blast. Love you,

A very similar story to the Friends episode… my Gramma’s mac n cheese. I remember it being so good! I think it was normally shells, but it also had short spaghetti noodles and stove top in it. I always thought it was homemade. Until my bridal shower! Each attendee gave a recipe with their gift and my Gramma gave me her mac n cheese recipe – Kraft box with added stove top! (she didn’t mention the spaghetti noodles) I was so surprised! My Kraft mac n cheese still doesn’t taste like hers!

Hope the girls can see their brother soon!

Good Morning! I do a lot of baking, cakes for other people, etc.. I have several recipes from my grandmother, my mom, my husbands great grandmother. I love old family recipes. After I married Lan and we had our first Thanksgiving, he asked me to make his mother’s dressing (she had passed aways 2 years before). I made it and the look on he and his brother’s faces when they started eating it brought tears me my eyes as well as theirs. Thanksgiving around our house is a time when I try to recreate for them what they grew up with meal wise. Such a special time!

I have this great chocolate chip cook recipe from the mother of a little boy I used to babysit. She got the recipe online for what she thought was a couple of dollars. When she checked her VISA it was over $100.00! The site refused to give her the money back, so she gave the recipe to everyone she knew. It is the best cookie recipe I have ever had! My boys demand that I make a batch just for them (If I make a batch for work). I am a lousy cook, so for me to make something that my family loves is just astounding! If you want the recipe, just ask me!

As a part of my wedding present, my mom put together a recipe book of all her favorite recipes. I love it! I use it so much! The only thing is, though, that she’s changed some of the recipes without noting it. So if I make something and it doesn’t turn out quite right, I give her a call and sure enough, she says “Oh yeah, I always do xyz differently!” I *think* I’ve found most of her little changes though! 🙂

Herbie cake would be one of my Dad’s favorites. Now we know why Herbie was round. 🙂 BTW, he’s been in heaven over 8 years now.

    Hey, Leighann!

I’m so pleased you are still making Aunt Karen’s icing. Ofcourse, I should be, since I am you Aunt Karen. We are keeping your family and Ryan in our prayers. Love you all.

I was just perusing your blog and saw the entry about your trip. It made me homesick. I now live in Chicago but am from Roanoke. Every October my two sisters and I meet there for ten days of fall fun. One actually lives near Charlottesville. We didn’t this year because we all met in RI for my son’s wedding. So, instead, I had to be satisfied with autumn in the midwest. And, lo and behold, it was more colorful and beautiful than it has been in the Shenandoah Valley and Blue Ridge mountains in years. Go figure! But I did miss our October routine. Next year! Love Charlottesville. It used to be just a sleepy little “burg”. No more! Roanoke is still a little provencial but love it.
