Out on the town…

August 25, 2011/friends
Some friends came to visit for a few days so we took the kids to the Carnegie Science Center – an awesome museum in downtown Pittsburgh. We’ve never been so it was a great chance to figure out what the museum is all about.
On one of the floors there are some fish tanks.

Here’s Ryan looking over the railing to the robot section. He’s all boy.

There is a section specifically geared for 3-7 year olds. It was perfect. The kids spent a lot of time at the water feature.

A picture of the moms is in order (my friend Heather)

Ainsley found some stuffed animals in a log den.

Natalie found an area showing how farmers move things from the floor into a barn.

The older kids also really like the ball factory where you can use conveyor belts, air tunnels, etc to move balls throughout a factory.

Ryan liked the hats.

They also have a huge electric train section with an entire village… it is awesome. For some reason, I only took the following pictures (it could’ve been b/c we were trying to corral six kids 6 and under.

(this swing was in motion… so cool)

There was a ton we didn’t get to see. I can’t wait to go back and explore more sections of the museum.
We ended the day with segregated baths.

We loved seeing our friends and are sad to see them leave today.

Wow Leighann! That looks like a lot of fun!

Here in South Africa we have very few things like that for our children to go to. We have 2 functional hands-on science centers in the country, one in Durban (which is a 7 hour journey from where we live)and one in Cape Town (which is a 12 hour journey). There used to be one in the centre of Johannesburg (about an hours drive from us), but that one has been closed down due to it not being maintained as well as the fact that is it is not in the best area and not well attended. I believe they are in the process of revamping it and getting it ready to re-open, but that does not solve the problem of its location. A couple of proper museums (like the Museum of Natural History, which is floors and floors of rocks, dinosaur replicas, spears etc all behind glass. Not a very exciting outing for kids) around the country have small rooms that have a couple of things in them but nothing on the scale as what you seem to have. I love a lot of things about South Africa, but I do envy the activities that other countries seem to have for the children to do. Our children grow up mostly outdoors (which is great and I encourage) but even parks and places like that do not have many jungle gyms etc and the ones that do are overrun or delapidated.

    Have a great day!

What fun! It looked like the kids were having a blast! We have a place like that here in Kansas called Exploration Place.

I loved all of the pictures. Glad your friends got to come for a visit.
