On the catwalk…

November 12, 2009/Ryan
On the catwalk, and I do my little turn on the catwalk….

Ryan continues to tolerate his oxygen wean. I am still amazed and in disbelief that this will last. Someone please snap me out of this!  Every time I call and the nurse says his numbers are still great, I’m like, “Really?”

This morning, Ryan is at 6 liters per hour and the plan will most likely be to wean down to 5 during the day shift (they haven’t rounded, but there’s no reason to think they won’t continue the wean). His right lung still looks ‘better’ than it has for weeks. It doesn’t look perfect, but it does seem to have more air flow going through it.
He has less meds on board (morphine is totally gone) and they continue to wean down on those as well.   He just keeps moving right along.  Here he is modeling his new clothes.
Ah.. it’s such hard work being this cute
Please take note of the superhero on Ryan’s shirt. I think this is my favorite.

Oh, and I can’t remember if I told you, but Ryan is getting another tooth. That makes two!

Awww. I like the pic of you in Ryan’s bed reading to him. Too sweet.
I never thought about all the machines and wires and equipment in his room. What is the big thing on the left that looks like a big hot water heater? I admire you for the way you juggle your time/energy for your family. I really don’t think I could do it. Just do take care of yourself too.

Anonymous – the thing that looks like a water heater (there is one on either side) is a boom. It is basically a big arm that has poles, electric, oxygen valves, etc. on it and swings out from the ceiling. It is the main pieces that everything else equipment-wise is hooked to. If you look at the left one, the monitor is directly out of the frame on the upper left (shows all Ryan’s numbers). If you look closely, you will see Ryan’s beads of courage (from this admittance) coiled and hanging and then a bag of mouthcare products. On the right is his feeding pump, oxygen mixer (out of frame), med pumps – you can see how many he is on!) and ‘bag’ (exactly how it sounds… a bag to manual force air into someone’s pathway in an emergency – basically a human ventilator). And there you have it. 🙂

I pray for Ryan and the family every night and day. I have a question. Will Ryan ever get out of the hospital?

  • Leighann / November 13, 2009 / Reply

Kristie – excellent question! They originally told us to expect 12 months in the hospital. Other than the 8 wks home late April to late June and 2 wks in July, Ryan has been in the hospital. The goal is to get him home. We are hoping it is sooner than his one-year birthday. So, my answer is YES, Ryan will one day come home. 🙂

Thanks for all the explanation of the medical stuff.
I’m sorry it’s even necessary for you to know it. I’m also sorry Ryan has to look at it and not have the “normal” cutesy babyroom stuff to look at. But, I DO have the faith that he WILL come home soon and complete the family and God will restore these months. He’s a beautiful baby (don’t tell him I said he was beautiful;))with such beautiful eyes and eyelashes. You are doing a good job being a good mom to him!
