Mother and Child

September 1, 2010/Ryan

Many mornings when I come down to relieve the night nurse of her duties and get report the house is still quiet and Ryan is asleep. I lie down beside him on his little floor mat and lay my head on his pillow to rest. In these moments when he is still in that brief period before the completely awake state, he feels my head rest next to his and his eyes briefly flit open. A lazy smile forms on his lips and his eyes are joyful even though they are still half asleep. Sometimes he forms a word with his tongue between his teeth, his lips parted, and breathes a soft, ‘thhhhh’, a greeting he uses in his happiness during daylight hours. His tired eyes refuse to stay open although he tries with all his might, his eyebrows raising in an effort to help his eyelids obey, but they too are defeated by sleep. He settles again to heavy breathing and effortless comfort. And my eyes droop and close too, resting peacefully in the warm breath of my child.

Those are what memories are made of. That is so sweet. Sailor is like a little gofer, the second she hears or feels anything she just pops up on her knees and looks around like a little meerkat.

Leighann, these are the moments that you’ll remember forever, the moments that get you through the days when nothing goes right, the moments you’ll remember when you send him off to school. You have such a gift for putting your thoughts & emotions into words. Thank you for sharing & for helping me to remember those moments with my “baby” who’s now 7.
