It’s a Brand New Day…

December 2, 2009/Ryan

It’s a brand new day for Ryan. Around midnight, literally the beginning of today, he started satting in the high 70s to mid 80s… way more acceptable than yesterday’s typical 55. In the past two days I had as many conversations with as many doctors with the mention of a possible heart cath to see if yet another collateral opened up in Ryan’s heart resulting in low-lying sats.*

However, with this morning’s turn of events, poor Dr. K (cath dr) will be lonesome without us. Yeah!
I asked the attending today what in the world happened to bump up Ryan’s sats and her exact answer was, “I have no idea.” She went on to explain the team discussed this morning during rounds possible scenarios that could’ve literally changed over night and they couldn’t come up with a single one. There really is no rhyme or reason that Ryan’s sats jumped 25-30 points with no intervention while weaning off of narcotics, nitric oxide and the ventilator.
So thank you for your prayers – I happen to think without them Ryan would still be sitting in the 50s.
*The Glenn procedure causes high pressure in the arteries. When there is high pressure, collaterals form off of main vessels as an out for the blood building up thus ‘stealing’ blood away from the lungs. The result is lower oxygen saturations. Collaterals are volatile and can form at any time. The high pressure caused by the Glenn is lowered by the Fontan procedure so the concern for collaterals popping up decreases at that point.

his sats were in the 80s when he was born and he was satting in the 70s before the tissue expansion surgery (with his shunt). it has been a while since we’ve seen them back in the 70s/80s consistently.
