G-tube Surgery Today!

August 9, 2010/Ryan

Ryan has surgery this morning to try and place a G-tube. Dr. S says there may be too much scar tissue in Ryan’s belly to place the tube, but we will try. It’s in his best interest to get rid of the NG tube. It comes with inherent risks like nasal damage, incorrect placement, and aspiration (liquid going to the lungs instead of stomach). Aspiration can lead to pneumonia. So we will try for a G-tube today.

NG stands for nasal-gastric and basically is a tube that is strung through the nasal passage down to the stomach. G in G-tube stands for gastrointestinal and is a tube that is surgically place through the belly wall and into the stomach. It has a port that sits on the outside of the belly. Most people have a G-tube as opposed to an NG tube. Most kids only have an NG tube for a few months before being switched to a G-tube. Ryan has had an NG tube for nearly 18 months. First because he had an omphalocele and you can’t have a G-tube with an omphalocele. Then, we were busy working on higher risk issues. We are happy to say Ryan is in a position now to address the small things – like whether he has a tube in his nose or in his belly.

Please pray the surgery today is successful. Ryan’s nostrils need a break! I’ll update as soon as I can.

Wow– Best of luck today! It takes a bit getting used to but once you’re used to the g-tube, it is so much easier. Let us know if you have any questions about g-tubes, mickey buttons, etc…

Oh yes….I’m praying!! I’m so excited that Ryan has made it to a point where you can address “the small things” although this sounds like a pretty bid deal to me!! Hang in there. I’m sure it’s a tough day to have to sit and wait. I’m praying big time that the G-tube will be a success!
