An author in the house

June 5, 2013/Ainsley

There’s an author in our house and it’s not who you’re thinking. Ainsley’s class had an Author Party Tuesday afternoon. When I first got the invitation I thought it was a celebration for Eric Carle. They read several of his books last week as the days of school were coming to an end. I put the paper to the side and promptly applied mommy brain to it.

Over the weekend, however, she told me she wanted me to come because they were reading stories they had written. Huh, whuuut? Definitely want to see that!  So I got my act together and got to the Author Party…

This is my shy daughter reading her book with her partner. I videoed it, but you can’t really hear anything… don’t worry, I was there and couldn’t really hear her either. But she did smile big when she looked at the crowd. (ignore the ace bandage wrapped up her leg. She has a bum ankle and likes to wrap her ENTIRE leg for school.)

After all the kids read their stories there were a few minutes left so they talked about their favorite memories from their first grade year. Many of the kids mentioned their teacher, Ms. Adams. She really is a great teacher and loves each of the students. One of the kids mentioned his favorite memory was the exercise videos….. Ms. Adams had us parents send in small exercise balls after Christmas for the kids to use as chairs. She’s found kids are able to focus more on the balls. They also occasionally do brain breaks to get their wiggles out. Exercise videos must be part of that regimen. No wonder the kids love her!

Ryan sat with Ainsley during the last few minutes. He loves his sister and she loves him.

The kids were responsible for illustrations as well.

Each of them also read their section “About the Author”. It was fun to hear what each of them enjoy doing.

The Monkey, by Ainsley Marquiss

Once I was walking on the sidewalk. I found a monkey. I didn’t want to take care of it but I took it anyway.

When I got home, the monkey tore the curtains, smashed the lamps, and wrecked the house. I remembered Mom was out, so that got me more scared.

When I took the monkey outside, he smashed the car. Then I took him in and took him upstairs. He smashed the beds. I was so mad that I locked him in my room.

He broke the door. When I caught him, the doorbell rang. I opened the door. It was the zookeeper. He said, “Did you see a monkey?”

“Yes, but why?”  “It ran away.”  “It’s in the house. It’s tied onto a door.”

Then he took the monkey back to the zoo. The doorbell rang again. It was Mom. she said, “Clean up!”

The End.

Ainsley, I really enjoyed your story! My favorite part is when the monkey was tearing the curtains in the house. It was so funny and I could really get a picture in my head. You are a talented author and I hope you keep writing books! Congratulations!

Cute story! Monkeys can be quite ornery I guess! 🙂 Ha! I loved the ending…when you rang the doorbell, looked at the mess that the monkey made by “smashing” everything…and you said “clean up”!!! You’re such a MOM! Ha!

    Love, Linda
