A word or two about Zumba

October 11, 2011/Health

Looks like everyone agrees with Clayton – the person who called first should be the one to call back when callers become disconnected. This is now the official International Cell Phone Dropped Call Rule. K? Thanks for helping us settle that one. Whew!

Now on to something equally important – how I’m still going to the Y after a month. Last week was a little crazy with Ryan’s cold. I only made it twice. It’s noteworthy though because on Thursday I tried a Zumba class. In case you haven’t heard of Zumba, here is a short clip to give you an idea.
That’s mild compared to what the class was like. It was way faster. I’d like to tell you I knocked their socks off and danced my heart out, but we all know it didn’t go like that. Give me a ball and basket to shoot at and I know how to handle my body. Give me a floor and a beat and I’m dead in the water. Literally. Several times I found myself standing still looking at the instructor with a puzzled look on my face. I couldn’t figure out how to pump my hips and move my arms at the same time. It was quite like patting my head and rubbing my stomach at the same time, except I can actually do that.
After the second song I was tempted to leave the class not because I was embarrassed, but because I wasn’t getting any fitness benefits. We all know I hate wasting time. However, my competitive spirit kicked in and I didn’t want the ladies to think I couldn’t hang. So my embarrassment over leaving the class trumped my embarrassment at how badly I dance. Figure that one out.
Anybody else try something out of your comfort zone lately?

Ha, I just tried Zumba the other day. And my experience was just like yours. Although I was there with a friend who was lost too, so we could just laugh about it!
