The Good Shepherd

Luke 15:3-7 And He told them this parable saying, “What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep and has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open pasture, and go after the one which is lost, until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost.’ I tell you that in the same way, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents, than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.”

Sometimes when a flock of sheep is out grazing, one of the sheep wanders away from the group. They have poor depth perception so often fall into ditches or ravines. Part of the shepherd’s job is rescuing these lost sheep. Jesus again compares Himself to a shepherd looking for lost “sheep.” We are those sheep! God cares for each lost person. He sees each one of us as individuals that He wants to save. He says that He would leave the 99 sheep that aren’t lost to go looking for the one who is. We aren’t just a number to God.

Activity: The Lost Lamb game – Take three opaque plastic cups and place them open-side down on the table. Put a small object (even better if it’s a lamb) under one of the cups. Rotate them quickly over the surface of the table. See if kids can keep track of where the “lost lamb” is.
