40-day Easter Journey 6

Jesus Starts His Ministry

Matthew 4:17 From that time Jesus began to preach and say, “Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

Jesus starts his ministry at the core of the issue. To be in a right relationship with God, we must recognize we are sinners and turn our hearts from ourselves and toward Christ. Repentance indicates an actual change of mind… a willful act of leaving our past behavior behind us. Our natural instinct is to think only of ourselves and our own needs. Repentance brings us to a place where we think of Christ and His will for our lives.

The gospel is simple: Sin separates us from God. We are sinners. The only way to a right relationship with God is through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ; and to accept the gift of life, we must confess our sins and turn from them (repentance). Ask God to help you do that today.

Activity: The “Repentance” Game.  Stand with your children directly in front of you, but facing away from you. When you shout, “Run!” they should run as fast as they can away from you. When you shout, “Turn” they should turn around and run back toward you. Repeat. Talk about how when we aren’t willing to repent of our sins, we are running away from God, but when we repent, we must turn away from our sinful ways and run toward Him.

Leighann, loved this! We will play this game from now on!! I was varying on the time when I said “Repent” and told the kids no matter how long they sin, a short time or a long time, they can always repent. It was really cool because when Jake ran back to repent, he had the biggest smile on his face and jumped up into my arms. So I then added that God will always be ready and excited for you to turn from your sin. Loved it!! Thanks again! Really special time!!

My kids loved it too!! Ryan did’t want to stop playing but it was time for the girls to catch the bus. I’m so glad your kids are enjoying it.
