Works for Me

July 28, 2010/WFMW

I love hardwood floors. We have lived in houses with hardwood floors for nearly 10 years now. But with them come a few pet peeves. One is how the furniture won’t stay in place if left to it’s own devices.

In our previous homes it was okay because there was a wall behind the couch, but in our new abode, we get this:

So I set off on a mental mission to fix this problem. I’ve used felt in the past, but that just keeps the couches from scratching the floor. My solution was to get a shelf liner (a rug pad will also work I think)…

And cut it into little strips for the couch legs to sit on.

I’m not sure why I thought little strips would hold back the flying of my children and the weight of my giant. The couch continued to look like this at the end of the day:

So I cut bigger strips.

And while I was cutting the bigger squares I got to thinking… (always dangerous). What if I layered the strips so they gripped each other? Now there’s a thought.

And now at the end of the day my couch is in place. I do have to reposition the couch on the strips every other day or so, but it works pretty well. Much better than anything else I’ve ever tried.

Does anyone else have a tip for keeping furniture in one spot?

I can’t resist 🙂 You could get the giant to just screw the couch to the floor. ***smirk** Actually I think your idea is a good one. Ryan is looking great BTW~!

I too have wood floors and have found that if I place the front two legs of the sofa and/or chair on a rug (we have large area rugs — looks like you do too), the furniture will stay in place. I also have my rugs on rug pads which helps keep those in place. I love the look of wood floors but I agree, it’s difficult to keep furniture from moving around.

They do sell round coasters made out of rubber which also grip so the furniture does not move. Home depot or Lowes have them

Oh I’m going to try that. My couch in my basement is constantly in motion.

I agree with the rubber pads. We put them on our couch and love seat and they work wonders. Maybe a little too well because when it’s time to sweep under them I actually have to lift them to move them. 🙂

I tried the rug idea and the rubber discs. I think because my sofa legs are odd shaped the discs didn’t work. i don’t know why the rug didn’t work… but the shelf paper is working. whew!
