When life hands you snow….

… make snow cream!

This is a great activity to do with little kids. It’s so simple a five and three year old can do it.
UPDATE: I am linked to Tasty Tuesday over on Beauty and Bedlam. To join the fun, click here.
Here is what you’ll need:
A large mixing bowl filled with clean, white snow
1-2 cups whole or evaporated milk
1-2 tsp of vanilla extract
1/2 – 1 cup of sugar.
Pour the milk into a measuring cup (I think you can use any milk. My friend used sweetened condensed, I know someone else who uses only milk, I used only 12 oz. evaporated. The idea is to add as much liquid as necessary to get a melting frozen yogurt-type consistency). I added the vanilla to the milk – we used 1 1/2 teaspoons.

And then the sugar – we used 1/2 cup and it was plenty sweet.

The girls stirred it together to help the sugar dissolve. (This is their ‘smile for the blog’ faces).

Now you have sweet, vanilla milk. I probably could’ve stopped here and drank that milk straight down, but I stayed focused for the sake of the children.

Add the milk to the snow:

And stir:

Optional: We divided up the snow cream so we could have custom flavors:

And then we went to town… I used cinnamon and toffee chips because let’s be honest cinnamon makes the world go round. The girls used banana slices, chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, strawberry jams, and sprinkles. Play around to make what you like. Just thinking out loud here, but if you like coconut you could use coconut milk instead of milk throw in some coconut flakes. The options are endless.

You can freeze what you don’t use but it will change the consistency. Here is some we froze. We had to let it sit out a little before being able to get a spoon through it.

Enjoy!! Let us know what flavors you make.

that looks like so much fun! i was just thinking today as i read your blog that i’m so glad ryan is home during all this snow so you don’t have to travel back and forth to be with him. i know that it’s a lot of work to care for the little guy but how wonderful that he can sit in his little chair and flirt with you guys as you make snow cream 🙂 love you,

yay! Glad you finally got to try some snow cream. 🙂 My kids beg for it if they see even the smallest amount of flurries…which is about all we get here in Alabama.

Good times!! And, just a hint, if you just a smidge (a tablespoon maybe) of some form of alcohol (I use rum) it helps it not freeze so hard–works for regular homemade ice cream too!!

We did this with the first big snow right before Christmas. Try adding ovaltine after you make the vanilla base. Sooooo good!!!

Thanks for posting this! My granny made us snow ice cream when we were kids. We made some tonight with the kids and we added banana instant pudding powder to it and made yummy banana ice cream and then added some chocolate sprinkles on top. Mmmmm.
