Natalie’s first spring soccer practice was Wednesday. It was freeeezing out. Literally. I don’t think it was over 40 degrees. Natalie fought me to wear pants and a shirt under her practice clothes. She told me she gets very hot and wouldn’t be able to breathe with only one air hole (a hole she pointed to in her sweatpants). Seriously. How did my children get so dramatic when their parents have ice in their veins?
When we got there she was very happy to have her layers as well as the scarf and gloves I’d thrown in the car for her. The rest of us sat outside for about five minutes before jumping in the car to wait it out. We ate Ryan’s left over peanut butter sandwich that he didn’t want from earlier in the day and some candy we found in my purse from Easter morning. It was rough.
Meanwhile Natalie worked on her skillz.
And came to the car for her water break (I was parked right at the edge of the field)
Saturday was game day. It was a little warmer, but not that much.
Again – she fought me on the layers – then said she was cold at the field.
This one did not regret her decision not to play this spring. She spent the game blowing bubbles, cuddling with her dad, and playing on the adjacent playground with her dad and brother.
They don’t keep score at this age. Our family does. Natalie’s team won.

I’ve often thought that I would pack the extra layers they refuse to wear and then make them pay for them – with extra chores- when I’m proved right. Harsh I know, but I want some credit for the wisdom my older age has given me! LOL.
And yeah for keeping score and BOO! for everyone getting a trophie just for showing up. We’re old skool too!
