I am so excited to report that Ryan was extubated at noon today and is doing wonderfully. His color is good, his numbers are good and he seems happy. He was alert during my visit and I enjoyed talking to him and holding him – I cannot express how good this felt.
Two big concerns right now:
1) He has a lot of secretions in his chest that he needs to cough out. And, since he isn’t really good at swallowing, he sometimes chokes on his secretions once he does cough them up.
2) His white blood count is up… he was running a fever the day of his cath (Tues) so they put him on antibiotics and ran cultures. The cultures are back negative for infections, but since his white blood count is up, they are keeping him on the antibiotics. He could be fighting a number of things including pneumonia.
Please pray these two things resolve themselves with no serious hurdles.
It’s great to hear all the “baby steps” Ryan is taking! I continue to believe that God is doing an absolute miracle in his life. Every breath is a testament to that! I will be praying for your two latest requests. Thanks for giving us something specific to pray for!
Not sure if this is possible, but is he able to allow someone gently pat his back often to help break that stuff loose and get out of him? Curious. Or does little guy have such limits to what can be done he has to get it up on his own?
Right now, Ryan is chugging up the hill thinking “I think I can! I think I can!”, but Ryan seems to be able to look back after every hill and think “I knew I could! I knew I could!” He’s such a strong boy! Keep chugga chugging Ryan.
