The boy: An update

October 21, 2011/Ryan

In the last three weeks a cognitive light-bulb has gone off in Ryan’s brain. He’s mimicking everything the girls do whether it be singing, spelling or dancing in circles. He’s asking for things in groups,.. “bread, peanut butter, jelly.” “Movie. Steins (Little Einsteins).” Still no verbs, but lots and lots of words. And questions. “Happened?” “Come? (How come?)” And connecting dots. When I say, Let’s go! He says, “Cars!” Or when I say, The girls’ll be home soon. He says, “Bus!”

He started initiating games too. Typically when I’m trying to keep him stimulated in the car I’ll say an animal and ask him what it says. Last Saturday while we were driving around he said, “Mom, cow. moo.” I repeated what he said (if you don’t have a toddler just know that if you don’t acknowledge what they say, they say it over and over until you do). Then he said, “Sheep. Baaaaaaa.” He continued through all the animals he knows and then started over.
He’s also suddenly constantly on the move. He’s always taking my hand saying, “Play, play.” He loves the playground, especially the swings and slide; he’s taken to puzzles, which I’ve tried to get him to like for the past year, he loves movies… what male doesn’t!, and throwing balls. He’s all boy. Oh, except he like Barbie movies. His sisters have trained him well.
The biggest thing to happen this week is that two days in a row he’s come to me and asked to get on the potty. He’s done this before. He likes to wipe. What can I say? I don’t pee in private anymore. But the last two days, the times he’s asked me to get on the potty, he’s actually gone poopy. Both times. Within a minute of me putting him on the pot. The boy knew he had to go. Whoo hoo for poo poo. I’ve been putting him on the pot the last few weeks when I think he’s about to go poop. It wasn’t until this Weds that he initiated getting on the pot. I think the light bulb has gone on for him.
He loves pointing out letters. I’ve been pretty laid back with him and learning. But along the way he’s picked up about half the alphabet. When we’re in stores or out and about and he sees a letter he knows he’ll point to it and yell it’s name. He started this in late August. We were at kindergarten orientation when he pointed to a banner with the letter R and said “R!” It surprised me so I came home and tried to figure out how many letters he knew. He probably knew about 5 or 6. In the last two months he’s picked up quite a few more.
While we’re on that note, he knows what a circle, square, rectangle, heart, diamond, star, and triangle are.
It’s exciting to see the little wheels turning in his brain. As I sat crouched down by the potty waiting for my son to drop a log the other day, I looked at him and realized he’s a becoming a little boy. Yea!

“… he’s a becoming a little boy.” That little boy who had zero chances of being born alive. My heart continues to overflow with gratefulness to our great God for this miracle boy. Jer. 32:27 “I am the LORD, the God of all flesh. Is there anything too difficult for me?” Love y’all!
