Monday we talked about an at-home summer reading program for kids so today I thought I’d bring the conversation a little closer to home and talk about my summer reading list. With Ryan’s surgery coming up I suddenly got the idea that I could read a ton while sitting by his hospital bed for three weeks. A TON!! {I might also take an online graduate course, but whatevs}
And speaking of graduate courses, with my new endeavor technically starting in the fall I realized it may be awhile until I read for fun again. Like three years of awhile so now I almost feel panicky that I need to get everything in NOW! So I plan to hit it hard over the next two and half months. Here’s where you come in. I need to know your favorite book so I don’t miss anything really out of this world.
Here’s what I’ve read so far this year:
Summer List 2015:

Probably the best book I’ve ever read (as judged by the fact that though I rarely read books more than once, I’ve read it 4+ times). “When Crickets Cry” by Charles Martin, his prose is fabulous and his heart is so obvious in his books.
Let me know what you think of “All the Light You Cannot See” I love historical fiction, favorite genre but I’m mixed about this one.
I’ve heard of When Crickets Cry – – I should check that out this summer.
Hmm .. my all time favorite books are The Little Prince and Jonathan Livingston Seagull … those two would carry you through … maybe half a day? I do re-read them every year, although I know them by heart now.
If you haven’t read it – The Pillars of the Earth (Ken Follett) is a historical novel, set in the 12th century. Really good read.
The Gift of Fear by Gavin (Gavin de Becker) – I just think every woman should read it.
Wild Swan, Swan’s Chance, a Season of Swans (Celeste De Blasis) – is a trilogy, starting in England during the Napoleonic wars, coming to Maryland, beautiful country and of course the issues of slavery, and the civil war, and … a few generations of the same family and their beautiful thoroughbreds.
🙂 Happy reading, even if you don’t pick any of these. Praying for a successful surgery for Ryan and a speedy, easy recovery. M.
Ooooh, the Swans trilogy sounds intriguing! I read Pillars of the Earth last summer. I read it right after reading Goldfinch which is also over 700 pages long. After reading those two I felt like I’d run a marathon in my brain….. haha! I’m going to check out your suggestions. 🙂
“A Tree Grows In Brooklyn” by Betty Smith, is my all time-favorite-MUST-read novel. It will surprise you! The best book I read recently is “Gilead” by Marilynne Robinson. So rich!
I don’t know why I’ve never read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn…. I think I might even own it!
I was surprised how much I liked Dark Places. I recommend Girl on the Train, Still Alice, and State of Wonder (Patchett). They are in my “Books of 2015” folder of photos at facebook.
I loved All the Light You Cannot See. Big Little Lies was really good too (I’ve liked all the Liane Moriarty books I’ve read). Thanks for the book ideas. Happy reading and we’ll be thinking about Ryan and saying prayers in July.
