Ryan Update

June 22, 2009/Ryan
I know I told you Friday we were in the HKU and everything was going fine….that was until about 5:30 p.m.   It was about that time four nurses came rushing into our room and looking at Ryan. He was sleeping. I was reading a book. They started observing him and I kindof looked at one with an odd expression. Everything ok? I asked nonchalantly. The monitors say he desatted but he looks ok. she says. We’re just checking up on him

About 15 minutes later, Ryan’s still sleeping and I’m hungry. You think it’s safe for me to go grab a burger I ask. Yeah, the nurse says. We’re just hanging out to see if anything else happens, but it looks like he’s rebounding
The call comes while I’m waiting for the grill guy to finish my burger. I look at my phone and see it’s the main number for Children’s. It could easily be any of the doctors offices calling to schedule an appointment so I’m not especially worried. It’s the nurse saying I should come upstairs right away.
Long story short is that because Ryan desatted and they don’t exactly know why (he was sound asleep as opposed to crying or choking) they decided he needed high flow oxygen. You can only be on high flow oxygen in the CICU so down the hall we trodded
Ryan spent the last two days back in the CICU. Saturday his preliminary virus tests came back as positive for the flu but then the final results came back today as negative. We (we meaning the doctors) really just think it’s a matter of pain. We weaned him back on oxygen today and changed his pain regimen from morphine to methadone. The morphine was being given through a peripheral IV and the methadone is oral. Which means, Ryan can come home with it.
So, the skin expander surgery seems to be more painful for Ryan than the typical case. We are hoping we can get his pain under control and leave by Tuesday. All in all he is resting comfortably if he isn’t moved. I feel bad for the little guy and look forward to his body healing to a more comfortable state.
Moving on…. there was a tornado watch today at our house and I think it actually touched down. I came home after spending five days at the hospital to this:

I’d show you a picture of my room except that Henry is sleeping in it. I always knew he could sleep through a storm.

Praying Ryan will be able to come home soon. Is he still in the CICU?

Hope Ryan starts to feel better soon. Poor baby boy.
I feel so terrible for blaming my innocent children for the messes in our house all these years. Tornados have probably touched down here too.

I believe that tornado made to my house early this morning 🙂

Praying for Ryan and that the doctors can get the pain meds right for him.

Hang in there. The pain med wean was very difficult for our daughter and you may encounter some bumps. I know its no fun when you want him home– just know that such bumps can be expected and while frustrating shouldn’t be taken as alarming. Ryan’s strength and determination will win out yet again and he’ll inspire us all over again.

Best of luck– we’re thinking of you. Let me know if you want to talk through the frustrations.
