LIttle Boy Blue…

April 22, 2010/Ryan

Our little blue boy is blue indeed. It became apparent he had a stomach bug on Wednesday afternoon when I walked in the house and was hit in the face with the smell of sick poop. You know how some bowel movements smell like the person is sick? Well, let me tell you, it was obvious Ryan was sick.

He vomited (at the time the nurse and I thought it might be spit up) several times within an hour and we were starting to watch him a little more closely to make sure he was oaky. When I came home from picking Natalie up from school the nurse reported, “He had a big mess; and it was water. You should’ve seen it.”

Hmmm…..no thanks! Glad I missed it! And a silent prayer offered up to heaven, “Thank you for providing me with nursing help!” and “Thank you Ryan is sick when the nurse is taking care of him.” But enough about me.

Poor little Ry-Ry had one more little spit up episode – hardly anything really and another small bowel incident. So his milk-based diet went into the fridge.

And Pedialyte went into the bag at a continuous feed rate (read: very, very slow) to get the liquids in without having them come back out right away.
(looks like pee doesn’t it? I assure you it’s not)

He had a rough night too. He vomited again so the nurse held his feeds until this morning. I’m waiting to see if he tolerates it. He didn’t have diarrhea in the night so that is good. But he did have a fever which came down with treatment. And he cried for three straight hours. This morning there will be much observation to determine next steps. I’m hoping he’s on the mend, but if not there will be a trip to a doctor… or at least a lab to see if he’s dehydrated. I’m praying he’s over the worst of it and we can stay put.
Here he is staring at me. Yep, just staring. I tried and tried to get him to smile for the camera. This is the best he could come up with.
(and yes, that is a garbage bag under his mat… I have to protect my rug and floors with something and I’m all class over here.)
And let me give a big shout out to Pedialyte packets. These little babies are the bomb. I’ve had the jugs of Pedialyte before and let me tell you it’s hard to get a kid to finish that much Pedialyte, especially when they are sick. So these packets are quite handy, thank you very much. Has anyone else tried them? Have they been around forever and I’m just new to this?

Poor baby, hopes he is on the mend. I have never heard of the ped packs. I am so going to look for them next time. I just tossed out a used jug of pedlyte. I hate wasting the money.

Yuck! No fun! That stomach bug is yucky. Hopefully no one else gets it. Yes I really like the single serve packets. I have had a hard time finding them recently. We keep those on hand and those Benadryl single serve packets on hand as well for Rachel. Hey thank the Nurse ten times over!! 🙂

Oh 🙁 I hope he feels better soon. I found those individual pediatlytes last fall when I was getting ready to travel back to Baltimore. They are about the same price per ounce as the jug (but you also have to buy the bottled water…) but much more convenient, especially for traveling. LOVE THEM!

I was in the doctor’s office with a sick child yesterday and saw a magazine with a whole story about a boy born with his heart outside of his chest. He is 12 now and doing well. Here is the link to People Magazine I found it in:
