Happy Labor Day 2011!

September 5, 2011/friends

On Saturday, the only sunny day of the weekend, we took our friends down to Pittsburgh’s Strip District, a section of the city where wholesalers have shops for fresh meats, kitchen gadgets, spices, flowers and candy. You can also get Steeler attire, of course.

We took them to Wholey Food Market to buy ingredients for Sunday brunch. The kids had as much fun as the adults.
There are live fish.

A singing cow.

And a balloon man. Check out Natalie’s horse. Seriously. A balloon horse. Neigh…
Ryan’s was a motorcycle, another unique balloon. He had a part of it unraveled within five minutes. I couldn’t bare to have the balloon man see his creation ruined in a such a short amount of time so I kept Ryan’s back to him while we waited for everyone to get their prize.

We finished at Primanti Brothers, a well-known sandwich shop. I’m gonna be honest – and hometown Yinzers are gonna be upset – I wasn’t impressed with the food. Here’s the sandwich complete with slaw and fries on it.

The bread was a fluffy white bread without much flavor. The fries were soggy. I thought the flavor of the slaw overpowered the tastes of everything else. I thought that until I took the slaw off the sandwich so I could taste the meat and fries, but then realized there wasn’t much flavor left. I was highly disappointed.
There are those that swear by Primanit Brothers so if you’re in Pittsburgh, don’t shy away just because I didn’t like it. It’s on every To See list for Pittsburgh so you should try it for yourself.
The rest of the weekend it rained so we holed up in the house eating and playing games. What did you do this weekend?

We have found that if somewhere is considered “the best” by magazines & lists, then it is probably worth staying away from! Interesting!
