Gray’s Anatomy

September 28, 2009/Ryan
Ryan had a quiet weekend. There was talk of extubating (removing the vent tube) on Thursday, then Friday, Saturday, and then Sunday. Every day something came up to postpone extubation. Thursday his nurse felt he was ready, but the doctors wanted to give him one more day of CPAPs. Then Friday, the doctors thought he was ready, but the nurse was uncomfortable because the unit was short-staffed and he was afraid he wouldn’t be able to watch Ryan as much as necessary during an extubation. Saturday Ryan’s x-ray was fuzzy meaning he was positive (holding fluid). Sunday his lungs didn’t look like they were inflating the whole way so now the talk is to turn the vent support back up a tad and try extubating later in the week.  I cannot wait to get this tube out of Ryan’s nose. We are basically in a holding pattern development-wise until comes out. Then, I can talk to OT and PT to figure out how to start helping Ryan develop his eating, speech, and physical milestones.
Over the weekend I was talking with some friends about updates on Ryan. They mentioned a lot of my medical updates are filled with terms they don’t understand. This is good feedback. In fact, it is consistent with what two of my sisters told me this past week. Our family has had seven months of being able to ask questions of nurses and doctors for clarification, and I tend to forget y’all aren’t privy to those conversations. So, if there is anything you don’t understand, please feel free to raise your hand and ask for clarification. I will answer you in the comments section of that post.
Hope you guys had a good weekend. What did you do?

Oh, I hope Ryan can get extubated soon. You will be in our prayers (always are).

And you do have a very impressive medical vocabulary. I think I’ve looked up terms a couple times, and I have a PhD in Medicine…

Sorry to hear about the postponement of the extubation. I’m glad to hear of a nurse who cares enough about Ryan to admit that he might not be able to be attentive enough to extubate! If it had not been delayed, would his fuzzy x-ray and under inflation of his lungs have caused have caused him to get the vent tube back? Just wondering!

Hm, our weekend was slow . . . which was a very good thing! Everyonce in a while we schedule a “do not schedule” weekend so we can actually relax! 🙂

Yes, fuzzy lungs are not good and would’ve caused a reintubation. 🙂

Just an idea… maybe you could have a “glossary” post and link to it in the side-bar of your blog… or just put the glossary on the side bar. Love your updates and we are praying!

Continued prayers for Ryan…God will provide all you need in His perfect time, I’m sure.
I love the photo on the sidebar. My #2 daughter has sucked her middle two fingers and held her own (or anyone else’s) ear as long as I can remember…she will be 9 at the end of November!
    Blessings, E

    Leighann,
I’m glad to hear Ryan is doing well, I can’t wait for him to be extubated and the OT/PT talk for his eating, speech and physical milestones is very exciting! (if you want, I have some books & handouts on the milestones if you’re interested in looking at them and of course you’ll get information from the OT/PT’s there with Ryan)
You do an awesome job of explaining in detail 🙂
My weekend was adventurous – Friday was my birthday, Saturday was the Sun,Run,Fun & Walk Fundraiser for work it was the first one so we had a race & fun activities for families & kids i.e. bean bag toss, crafts and massages & Sunday a friend of ours at work got married on the beach in O.C. whew! Looking back, I cannot believe how fast Sept. flew! In just a few days will be October! Will continue to pray for Ryan & your Family 🙂
