Good Beginnings.

August 5, 2010/Family

Things were quiet around here last weekend. It was just Ryan and his nurses. You see, the rest of us took a little break… at a lake a few hours from us with some friends. (Please don’t feel bad for Ryan. One day he will be able to enjoy vacations with us. We didn’t take the girls when they were toddlers either, especially to deep bodies of water.)

We started with dinner followed by a special, campfire dessert. First you make a good, rip-roaring fire.

Then you gather sticks.

And then….

Dessert was a hit… Natalie likes her marshmallows a little more than golden, but not quite charred sandwiched between the traditional chocolate and graham crackers.

Ainsley likes hers raw with chocolate, hold the graham crackers

Kristen just likes marshmallows. Whole. In one bite.

Henry was the go-to guy for gooey charcoal.

He loves his marshmallows charred beyond recognition… which the kids were good at making.

Bliss.

I’m a big fan of double-fisting it with marshmallows toasty golden brown. Crispy on the outside, gooey on the inside, with no taste of fire.

Tangent warning: It’s rare I’ve seen a head larger than Henry’s. But the neighbor’s Great Dane took the prize. Seriously, dude. That’s one big head.

After dessert, sparklers made an appearance.

The kids loved running around making shapes and names in the sky.

But when our host started doing fire dancing, we decided it was time to call it quits.

Time for bed. We had a big day planned for Saturday.

It looks like everyone had a blast! We took the kids on their first camping trip and ours really since we have been married last month. We made smores and everyone loved them!
Thanks for the tip about EBAY for the puppy blanket! I won one today and it wasn’t that bad $$$-wise!!! Can’t wait to have another one in my hands for emergencies!

ha ha this is a great post!!! love the marshmallow comments. and leighann, we like them toasted the EXACT same way!! lol

also (tangent warning back at you) i thought you might find this link interesting…are YOU the one whose blog i got this from in the first place?? if so, i’m sorry for the repeat, haha. anyway, it’s a money saving and meal planning thing that also includes some biblical quotes. you have to join the email list, and they email you the free (electronic) booklet for monthly meal planning etc.

i did it and already printed out the specific pages you need for the plans. this weekend i’m going to plan out the next several weeks. i printed them on good quality so that then i can just photocopy them on the printer/scanner on lower quality for fast, (cheaper) multiple copies to have several copies ready without having to access the document again each time.

at the end of the e-booklet there are some of her favorite money-saving recipes and other frugal tips. if you have it already, again, my apologies for the redundancy. i can’t remember where i found this. but i thought it sounded like something you might be interested in if you hadn’t seen it!
