Apparently, eating is exhausting. It takes a lot of energy for an infant to nurse which is why they tend to fall to sleep immediately after nursing – or while nursing for that matter. For a heart baby, it is even more exhausting because they use a lot of energy just to breathe. Calories are necessary for eating and vice versa so it can be difficult for heart babies to gain weight.

As you know, we are working on getting Ryan to suck, swallow, and breathe all at the same time. Not an easy feat for a baby who is used to getting food by just lying in his crib. Who wants to start working for something they didn’t have to work for before?

Additionally, we are dealing with a baby who has never had the chance to work on his sucking and swallowing reflexes. He was intubated literally within minutes of birth prohibiting any type of swallowing – even of mucus. For healthy newborns this is a trait they must work on so you can imagine how much more difficult it is to teach an old baby new tricks.

Ryan took 4 ccs of milk earlier this week and 11 ccs yesterday…all through a bottle nipple. I’ve tried nursing several times and he kindof just played around. He sucked one time almost 2 weeks ago before his cath procedure.

Today I was so excited to hear he did 11 ccs. For perspective, he needs to get up to 120 ccs to be near full feeds. We decided I should try to nurse him again later in the afternoon, just to see what he would do. Knowing he wouldn’t get any nutrition, we would not count it as a real feed, just practice.
So, around lunchtime he was fidgety and fussy and I thought, well, now is as good as 1 p.m. so let’s give her a whirl. Drum roll please…. Ryan played around for about 2 seconds before fully latching and sucking and swallowing and breathing – all at the same time. And not just for one suck either, I lost count at 13 because I was FREAKING out.
Why, you ask?  Well, first of all, we thought he didn’t know how to suck (suckers, he thought). And, we didn’t know if he would latch (silliness, he thought). And, we didn’t know if he could do both and breathe at the same time (satisfied, he thought).
Again, why is this a big deal?  Hmmmm, how can I explain how huge this is…. um, I can’t. Just believe me, it’s huge.
And I was freaking out because the OT didn’t want to exhaust him, the nurses/docs want to keep track of how much he’s eating (and how do you measure nursing?), and one thing they are watching is if the milk is going down his esophagus or down his trachea (into his lungs).
So, I pushed the emergency button – who else pushes the emergency button when their child starts nursing?  I had the nurse page the OT to see if Ryan was allowed to nurse – like for real nurse, not practice nurse.
Green light….nurse as much as he can and don’t worry about which ‘pipe’ it’s going down unless he starts choking.
No choking here. Just pure enjoyment. After nursing full force for 3-4 minutes, Ryan plopped back on the pillow, hands up by his head, and just looked at me…E.X.H.A.U.S.T.E.D. He had nothing left, he’d given his all, so we hooked his feeding tube back up to the pump and we let him relax while he finished off his lunch.
This is him about 60 seconds after nursing.

Ryan is AMAZING!!!!! I came to check the blog after I read this opening paragraph of an email from ChristianBook.com:

“A beautiful thing happens the more we learn to trust in God. When we come to him with the struggles we’ve tried to carry on our own, He takes the weight from us, and gives us His gifts of patience, perseverance, strength and peace. Our heavenly Father gives good gifts when we turn to Him in our need.”

It made me think of you.
    Love you.
