There’s nothing worse than sitting down on an already warmed public seat other than sitting down on an already warmed public (or private) toilet seat. Some things are meant to be cold to the touch, but I digress. (Yes, that was totally random and has nothing to do with this morning. Other than the fact that when I sat down in the packed cafeteria for lunch the seat was already warm and it totally grossed me out. Now on to more important things.)

Ryan’s surgery this morning went very, very well. The plastic surgeon is extremely pleased with the lay of the expanders he placed in Ryan’s chest. They are placed well and the surgery went off without a hitch. After a week or two of recuperation, we are to see the plastics department twice a week to have Ryan’s expanders expanded. 🙂

The anethstesiologist is also very pleased with how well Ryan is breathing at the moment. He extubated Ryan directly after surgery and Ryan is breathing well on his own. The biggest concern is how he will breathe once his caudal wears off in a few hours. (A caudal is much like an epidural – given for pain near the tail bone. The difference is that while both affect the nerve endings, the caudal does not paralyze the muscular system like an epidural does.) The concern is that if Ryan is in too much pain, he will take shortened breaths, not giving him enough oxygen. The caudal should last 4-8 hours depending on metabolization rate so we should know Ryan’s true breathing condition by tonight. If he does take shorter breaths, his pain will be managed by more medication. However, today’s procedure was minimal and usually doesn’t result in prolonged pain.

There is talk of Ryan returning home tomorrow evening if there are no glitches. That would be downright awesome.

And yes, Johanna, I’ll tell him his favorite aunt says hello.

I am so glad that all went well. We have been praying for him. Thanks for telling him his favorite aunt said she loved him, but please specify that it was his FAVORITE AUNT JOHANNA that said she loved him. Don’t want to confuse him and make him think otherwise. LOL

I feel the exact same way about seats (in fact, in law school we had these plastic seats and I would wander around my seat for a while before sitting down so it could cool off from the last class ha!) I’ve said it before, but I just wanted to let you know I’m praying for y’all and if you have any questions or anything about tissue expansion, let me know – that is one thing we are VERY familiar with (our daughter has had a total of NINE, which we expanded ourselves at home).
