Growing up my mom always had a garden, even when we lived in the city she grew tomatoes in our flower beds. She’s always taken us to pick-your-own farms and put up jams and canned vegetables. It’s in my blood.
I grew into my mother as I tended tomatoes, squash, and carrots in my townhouse flower bed early in marriage and moved on to cucumbers and tomatoes in our side bed last year. This year I’m very excited as we’ve banded together with two neighbors to have a communal garden.
Harvey and Nicki live across the street. Harvey also loves gardening. Suzette and Kevin live directly next door and are also interested in having a few crops. So we made a list of our must-haves and got to work.
Last weekend, we worked to repair Harvey’s beds from the year before and make another one for our added needs.
Here’s Harvey showing us what we need to do to repair the beds and make one new one.
Henry spent some time clearing out rogue grass from the tomato patch up near the house. Harvey put tomatoes here and they grew as tall as trees. We’ll try it again this year.
Nicki and Suzette spreading soil and manure.
Henry measuring the space between the boxes to make sure our pavers can fit.
More soil and manure…. the nice thing about raised beds is instead of digging down into the soil you buy wonderful organic soil, manure, and compost to make a wonderful place for your plants to live. This is necessary in places with clay soil or rocky soil. It’s easier than digging and digging and trying to add the good soil to the bad soil.
Henry and Harvey reinforcing the side of the beds.
Our beds are 6′ x 4′. We’re hoping to supplement the produce for three families.
