Communication Tip #465 for Marriages

August 16, 2010/Marriage

I am not the world’s best communicator, something I was reminded of just last week. However, here is one thing I’ve learned in the last five years that men should take note of.

The word ‘okay’ is used differently by the sexes. For example, when I ask Henry how he is doing and he says, “Okay.” I used to respond by saying, “What’s wrong?” He would look at me like I was a crazy and say, “Nothing. I said I was okay.” This left me very confused because when you ask a woman how she is doing and she says ‘okay’ what she really is saying is, “I’m not okay, but I’m not sure you have time to listen to all my woes. And even if you did, I’m not sure I want to go into them because I may just loose control and cry all over your shoulder leaving a snot stain on the seam of your pretty Gap t-shirt and that’s just gross.”

Suffice it to say, if your wife responds to your inquiries into her well-being with the word ‘okay’ you better get your rear in gear and get those kids to bed, snuggle her close and ask her what in the world is wrong!

LOL!!! I love this! We just had our 10th anniversary and I’ve recently realized this as well in our relationship. I even studied gender and communication in college but just didn’t apply it to us. Thanks for the laugh ๐Ÿ™‚

It is interesting that most women donโ€™t think men communicate clearly enough, but women are the ones who often say the exact opposite of what they are trying to communicate.

Weโ€™re not mind readers you know.

I’ve heard about this, but I’m not sure if this applies to me. Going to start observing.
