A Weekend to Remember.

May 16, 2011/Family

I took no pictures this weekend. I feel kindof bad about it because we had a really cool weekend.

Friday the girls asked if we could have a family movie night. We rented How to Tame Your Dragon and watched it after dinner with daddy.
Saturday we headed out early to go to a service project our church. A few couples in our church recently launched a ministry called Hope Orphan and Adoption Care Ministry to serve the world’s orphans and to come alongside those in our church body and local community who are in the process of or who have adopted. In their words, “HOPE Adoption and Orphan Care Ministry and RBC believe that the church is God’s answer to the orphan crisis, and this ministry seeks to be faithful to God’s calling to care for the orphan”. On Saturday, they put on the largest volunteer effort our church body has ever done. It required a third of our adult population to serve. But guess what?? All the volunteer slots were filled and there was a waiting list! Wanna know what it was?
We partnered with an organization called “Stop Hunger Now” to package over 142,000 meals to ship overseas to an orphanage in Swaziland. It was an awesome event and I’m so glad we participated. Natalie and Ainsley were amazing. They pitched in and had a great attitude running our bags of measured food to the volunteers running the bag sealing machines. I worried that Ains would be too young and (with her princess personality) not want to help out. But she did great. She stuffed bags with vitamin packets and when Natalie went to look for some supplies, she stepped in to run the filled bags to the sealers. At first she told me she didn’t want to take them to someone she didn’t know, but I assured her they were very nice and waiting for her to bring them. They would know exactly what to do. After the first run she was spot on and ready to run every bin after that. I am really proud of how much she is growing up.
Sunday afternoon was low-key. We ate with some friends, Courtney and Pat, and had a great time catching up with them and hearing about all their goings-ons. Then we rested, played as a family and laughed at the girls playing in the rainstorm until it was time for daddy to head back to Pittsburgh. It’s always hard to see him go. Sigh.
And now it’s on to a new week. And speaking of feeding children, here is what’s on our menu this week:
Sunday: Pulled Pork BBQ Sandwiches, baked beans, corn bread, corn on the cob, cole slaw

Monday: Chicken Lo Mein

Tuesday: Chicken Lettuce Wraps
Thursday: Tacos
Friday: Pittsburgh?
Anyone else do something fun this weekend?
I’m linking up to Menu Plan Monday!

Sounds like a super weekend! I am proud of your family for volunteering to help others…and especially proud of the girls. Great job.

Have you found a new house yet? i couldn’t get on the computer for a couple of days, so I didn’t know if I missed anything???

We are having company from Arizona this morning. I think they are staying a couple of weeks. Gotta get ready to pick them up, so I will close.

Love to Ryan…always praying for him…and for all of you!

i loved being a part of your weekend 🙂 and, i’m impressed you make real meals when henry’s gone. i would just serve cereal or sandwiches every night…

did you like the movie? I think that movie is cute.
Also it was funny when Henry walked into our house last night because no one knew he was coming. Apparently he had sent mom a text but you know how she is with her phone. Also unless mom made Henry’s bed (which I doubt), Henry made his bed after he got up this morning which I thought was pretty impressive.

That sounds like an amazing project! What kinds of food do you pack for them? We live about 4 hours drive from Swaziland, but it has been a long time since I have been there. There is a lot of poverty there, but it is less publicised than other African countries, so it is good to hear!

    Have a great week!

Lynda, we packaged together rice, soy protein, dehydrated veggies and a vitamin spice packet. The meals can be eaten by themselves or can be a base to add cultural ingredients to. They are purposefully neutral and vegetarian so they can be shipped anywhere in the world. It was an awesome event.
