Natalie spent the night at a friend’s house this week. Around bed time I got a call, the mom said Natalie wanted to talk to me. The conversation went like this:
Natalie: Hi, mommy.
Me: Hey, baby. How’re you doing?
Natalie: Good. Is Ainsley asleep yet?
Me, thinking Natalie wanted to know if she got to stay up later than Ainsley (because, I’m sorry, but she is always wanting to one-up her sister, or have the better piece of the pie): Um, I put her in bed a few minutes ago.
Natalie: But is she asleep yet?
Me: I’m not sure. I don’t hear her…
Natalie: Well, can you check? I wanted to tell her good night.
Me, melting and feeling really guilty: Oh, sweetie. Just a sec. Let me check…… she’s asleep already. I’m so sorry.
Natalie: When she wakes up tomorrow, can you tell her I called to say hi?
Me: Sure.
Natalie: Okay, thanks. Bye.
She hung up so fast I didn’t even have a chance to say ‘good-bye’ or ‘I love you’. I realized then she wasn’t calling to talk to me in the first place. And I got warm fuzzies thinking about the fact that she missed her little sister.

My girls are the exact same way! The oldest is always trying to one up the youngest but when it comes right down to it they are so close. They adore each other. 🙂
