Jesus as Truth

John 8: 31-32 Jesus therefore was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you abide in My word then you are truly disciples of Mine, and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

Jesus is talking to believers – Jewish ones in the passage – but to us as well if we believe He is the Savior. He tells them that those who follow His words (and the Word of God) are His disciples. He tells them by following His word we know the truth and that truth sets us free.

What does He mean, “Know the truth?” Jesus answers that in John 14:6 “I am the way, and the truth, and the life…”  JESUS is The Truth that sets us free. There’s no way to be free from the power of sin without first turning to the One who takes away our sin. He makes it possible for us to live a life pleasing to God. We can try to “be good” on our own, but knowing Him is what sets us free. Focusing on being good without knowing the One who is good  (Ps. 136:1; Ps. 100:5) doesn’t help us in the long run. We can’t be good for the long-term on our own. Knowing Christ should be our focus.  A good start is reading and memorizing God’s Word (the Bible) and praying. The more we spend time with God, the more we get to know Him and the Truth (His Son), the more we find ourselves wanting to do what’s right.

We know this because Jesus says further down in the passage (vs. 34, 36) “Everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin… If therefore the Son (Jesus) shall make you free, you shall be free indeed.” Knowing Jesus is the key to freedom.

Activity: Memorize John 14:6 “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No man comes to the Father, but through me.”
