Some thrifty finds.

June 24, 2011/Budgeting
The other day I drove by the local Goodwill store on my way to view a house. I couldn’t help stopping on my way back through. But without a house, I didn’t allow myself to buy a single thing. This was just a window shopping trip….
My biggest tip on thrifting is to look for potential, like this piece of furniture. It’s thin, so could be used behind a couch with matching lamps and a few accessories, in an entry way with a beautiful mirror or piece of art over top, or against a wall in any living space to provide storage. When you open the doors, it has shelves inside.

Now close your eyes just one minute and think about painting it… slate blue then distressed to show the wood tones underneath, muted taupe to match any home decor, or bright white for you shabby chic girls out there. With its chunky lines and detailed hardware, it could become quite a beauty.
And for $5.95 who could pass up trying?

I headed to the shoe department next to see what Pittsburgh women are wearing. There were several high end brands including these like-new Guess pumps in nude (the new rage) for $14.95.

Ryan found something he like too. A piano for $49.95. I’m pretty sure it has a cracked sounding board but he couldn’t tell the difference.

While I was taking his picture, I noticed this Calvin Klein summer suit for $24.95. This store has a thing for tagging on $0.95.

But the thing I really had to tear myself away from was this cheese dish. The dome was in great condition – no chips or scratches – and was sitting on top its matching plate. I love domes. Everyone from Martha to the Nester is using them. Paint this plate any ole color and display a favorite object underneath. Instant style for $3.95.

What bargains have you seen lately?

I’m so totally impressed you didn’t buy anything!

That hutch for $5.95 would have been in my trunk.

    I miss you.

Im moving into a condo (by the end of July) and starting college so just about everything I buy has to be thrifty. My favorite is the perfect $10 picture I found to hang above the $300 sleeper sofa (also a good find) that was originally $75. Its a tad scratched and has some stain on the back of it but I honestly don’t care. I’m really more concerned about learning how to re-grout a bathroom. People at Lowe’s really are as helpful as they are in the commercials. Who would have thought!!
