Pinterest Party

February 24, 2012/DIY

Happy Friday, everyone!! I love Fridays for several reasons. One is that my husband comes home in a good mood and stays home for two days. I love when he’s home. Second is because it’s a day to see what you’ve made this week off Pinterest. My sister, Dottie, made us a cute graphic. I need to figure out how to make it grab-able. I’ll work on that for next week.
This week I made a project I saw when Natalie was a baby and I was an HGTV junkie. I didn’t see it on Pinterest, but it is a project I’ve been meaning to do for quite sometime now.
Coming Home Outfit Shadow Boxes:
A designer made shadow boxes with the outfits the children came home from the hospital in to hang on the laundry room wall. As someone who isn’t a pack rat, but is somewhat sentimental, I loved the idea of framing items we all keep instead of leaving them in a box in the basement.
I started with a 10×10 shadow box from JoAnn Fabrics I got on sale…

I grabbed some scrapbooking paper to see which color I liked

There wasn’t enough contrast with the white… and while I love the black, I didn’t have the right size.

I also liked the idea of a fun color….
…but since I’m not sure what color I’m painting my laundry room (a big renovation is in my imagination!), I chose to go neutral. I was lucky that when the paper in the frame was turned over, it was a pretty oatmeal color. And I didn’t have to cut anything to size.
Then I played around with placement… did I want the sleeves tucked or untucked, add the hat or leave it out?

Ryan’s was easy because it was a 3 month-old onesie with socks.
To secure the shirts to the paper, I took regular sewing pins, put them through the fabric near the top of the t-shirt, through the paper and bent it into a horseshoe. Like so:
I didn’t pin the hats, the pressure of the frame keeps them in place. I did sew the socks with a few stitches to the onesie just in case.
I considered labeling them, but liked the simplicity of not having any writing. I labeled them on the backs for posterity and hung them on the wall.
Here’s how they turned out:

What did you make this week?

I totally LOVE your idea of the shadow boxes/take home outfits. IF ONLY I hadn’t given the kids coming home outfits away over 20 some odd years ago. I would have gone out today to buy me some shadow boxes. The past cannot be changed. I will give the idea to my DIL however. Have a great day Leighann

Loving this idea SO much! I’ve sold many of my daughters close and kept just a few items.. trying desperately not to be a pack rat. I did keep her coming home outfit and this would be a great way to remember. Thanks!

i love the shadow box idea! i’ve been trying to figure out what i should do with my son’s coming home outfit and his baptism outfit (which my mom made from my wedding gown). i think you’ve solved my dilemma. 🙂 thanks!!

i haven’t done much this week – trying to catch up on my son’s scrapbook while i’m on vacation. i’m only 11 months behind (which would sound impressive if he wasn’t only 16 months!). oh well!!!

Thank you for this! I love it, and will probably start this project soon. I open our cedar chest just to hold their clothes every once in a while, but how fun it would be to see them displayed! And our adopted daughter will think it’s great that she has the same thing as our other three. We kept the outfit she was wearing when we met her. She gets sad when we don’t have baby pictures to show her, like the others do,but this will make her little heart so happy. Great idea!!
