Ryan’s still in the hospital. After several cultures and swabs, we got the results back yesterday that he has a common head cold. It seems he may have more than one type of cold germ in his body…

Last year he was sick in January – almost three weeks – with a GI virus. We were able to manage it at home because he had a feeding tube (nothing like force feeding liquids) and oxygen equipment. After finding out there’s nothing serious going on and that IV fluids aren’t necessary I requested we be discharged with equipment. The team thinks I’m crazy. I explained we’ve managed oxygen before and doing it at home isn’t as hard as it sounds.

When Ryan’s new cardiologist came for his evening rounds I mentioned my request. “Sounds reasonable to me,” he answered. He met us in October, knows Ryan’s story, and knows how much we’ve done at home. He talked to the floor team and okayed us going home. Now, the team is trying to secure us equipment which is sometimes hard on the weekends. Our goal is to leave tomorrow, but it may be Monday.

Opposite of the first time Ryan came home on oxygen, I’m not disappointed to take him home on it at all. I know it’s temporary and I know it means I don’t have to be stuck in a room waiting for Ryan’s cold to go away. We’re just waiting now for insurance paperwork and approval so we can get our ticket out of here.

Thanks for your prayers. As always, we’ll keep you posted.

Glad to hear this positive update, and I hope they can find the equipment you need right away. It’s amazing what you learn to do as a mom of a child with medical needs and your ability to manage medical “stuff” at home (we’ve done the same thing, albeit on a smaller “scale.”) Best wishes for a good night of rest for everyone and a happier, healthier day tomorrow.

Oh my goodness…I am just now seeing this post! I am sorry that Ryan is in the hospital! Glad it seems to be a cold…and that they will let you go home with oxygen. He will feel more comfortable at home. And mommy will too. I will pray that he can go home soon.

    Love and prayers,
    Linda

Oh I’m so glad it’s nothing more serious! Cold’s are no fun for sure, and definately more scary for Ryan, but SOOO glad it’s not more than that!
