Hitting the jackpot

January 17, 2014/Budgeting

Although National Thrift Shop Day is in August (yes, can you believe it, an actual holiday celebrating thrift stores), January is typically the best month to find amazing items. That is not why I happened into a thrift store last week. Instead, I was in looking for old books in a certain color. I was like a lady possessed. Who else drags a 4 year old boy and a baby in a carrier into a thrift store in the rain to look for vintage books in hues of cream?

I did not find the books.

Instead I found 5 awesome games. Each with all their pieces and each $2.

That fourth one down – Minotaurus – is actually really fun. We played it as a family on Monday and Tuesday nights. Ryan already owned a Memory game, but this one was Toy Story and who can say no to this boy? Not his mama… nope. I have the hardest time…. so he now also has Toy Story Memory, which we’ve played non-stop since we got it home. (He also loves Perfection. He puts all the pieces in, then sets the timer and waits for it to pop.)

And see that Buzz Lightyear? $1.99. Yes sirree, Bob. The boy found him in the toy section and told me, “I need Buzz because he is Woody’s friend.” How could I argue with that?

I also found a Creature Crochet craft kit – never been opened, box in excellent condition and a Nerf Gun NIB. Both are going into my gift bin which is getting low… dangerously low. But don’t worry, this trip, plus one to Marshall’s brought it back up to comfortable range for the spring. (If you don’t have a gift bin, you need one… it saves a ton of money if your kids are going to birthday parties all the time… I also buy teacher gifts when I see a good deal and pull them out at Christmas or the end of the year.)

Piper likes what we got too. Here she is trying to nurse, I mean kiss, Woody.
