Although Ryan is only one week old, his personality is already showing through in a few areas:
1) He cannot stand to have the least bit of moisture in his diaper. When he cries, the first thing his nurses check is his diaper.
2) He has a little bit of a temper! He shows this in two ways: when his nurse has to do her hourly or bi-hourly stuff, i.e. draw gases, check his lines, suction his airways, etc. or even just change his diaper, he screams. Mind you, the breathing tube blocks the air coming up his throat so there isn’t any noise, but his little face shows it. His mouth opens wide, his eyes scrunch shut and his face turns beet red. (this last one is especially good since most mixed blood babies turn blue when they scream.)
He has so much of a temper that when he is not on a little sedation, he actually could probably throw himself out of the bed. I have only seen a glimpse of what he can do, but he has scared more than one of his nurses. What he does is arch his back and push of with his feet till he is in an inverted plank (if you’ve ever done pilates or worked on your core, you know what I mean). He is extremely strong for being so tiny.
3) Already at one week, he instinctively pulls at the tubes in his nose. His nurses fix that by either swadling him or laying a blanket over his arms to keep them down.
4) Like our other children, he seems to enjoy singing. Several times when I’ve been singing, I can see his little eyes moving behind closed eyelids. He will fight through the sedation to open his eyes and look at me. He can’t really focus yet – not sure if that is age or drug induced, but he’s looking, trying to find his mama.
That about sums up this little boy for now. He certainly is a fighter. We’re proud of him and are excited to see how his little personality grows with him.

It’s always good to hear that our heart babies have tempers. Maggie sure did since day one. It helps them so much! So, I have a love, hate relationship with Maggie’s temper. Thanks for sharing your precious boy with us. We’re praying for you guys and we prayed last night at our small group.
Heart Hugs,
Faith
How absolutely sweet that he is trying to fing his mama. Keep singing and touching him. Gotta boost the little king’s morale. Glad to hear he is a fighter. God is good. We love you and continue to pray for you.
PS I still think I am a better cook than you.
So I guess he’s gotta have a temper to fight so hard! Oh how precious! Thank you for such a great update 🙂
my son, Thatcher has a temper as well…when the nurses would come into the room even to look at him he would scream at them and once, when he was getting his 1 year old shots (3 months after his Open Heart Surgery) he spit at the nurse when she poked him. Didnt cry when she poked him, just spit at her. I know some people think I should be embarrassed for his behavior, but after all he has been through, he can spit at a nurse poking him with a needle if he wants to. Tempers can be good when they have to fight all the time. Good luck with all you are going through…our prayers are with you.
