I wonder if it is the brand? I have some German one that also has 2 other sets of blades for different cuts. It works flawlessly every single time. Potatoes are a snap effortless. I have never tried a tomato though…
I agree with Jennifer. I’ve actually sliced off the tip of my finger with one of those things. They definitely don’t work for me, but my husband (who is obviously less of a clutz than I am) loves it. I won’t even wash the thing any more…

My kitchen aid mandolin slices tomatoes and pretty much everything else with ease!
