Okay, not really day 262, but it’s starting to feel that way. My mom’s house has two walnut trees in the backyard. As kids we were tasked with picking up nuts during harvest time… 100 per day in the fruitful years. My mom dried them in the attic where they sat until we were ready to crack them. When I was in high school (I think it was the winter of ’96) we had a huge snow storm that had us off school for a week. Since we couldn’t go anywhere my mom hauled down a ton (possibly in literal terms) of nuts from the attic. We cracked so many nuts that week my hands were bruised from the nut cracker and I have yet to crack more. I’m pretty much cracked out if you know what I’m sayin’.

The girls have been off school for a week and we (read: mommy) is starting to go a little crazy. We’ve baked, done crafts, and played games. They don’t know how grateful they should be we don’t have a nut tree.
Yesterday was the first day daddy was home… something about white-out blizzard driving conditions. He worked from home holed up in the basement, but was able to come up and join us for dinner and a game of Yatze. Oh, and a quick game of tag in the early afternoon:

While Henry and Natalie played tag, Ryan chewed on his exersaucer:
And Ainsley chewed on an oreo truffle (mommy, step away from the baking supplies and no one gets hurt):
Here is a picture of our new snowfall. The driveway was shoveled to pavement the night before. I measured about 8 new inches:
Our wall of snow:
And for perspective, our split-rail fence:
What are you doing while snowed in?

I also am about done with the snow. My kids go out and play in it everyday, sometimes twice. So my days consists of dressing 5 kids warm enough to go out, then soothe crying kids as they come in cold, dry their clothes and start again. I am ready for them to go to school and give my dryer a break!

Well, as your mom, I have to comment on this one. Obviously the nut cracking activity was glorious or you would never have remembered it in such detail. Or maybe it wasn’t so glorious. I will give you and your readers the rest of the story. Some of those nuts never were brought down from the attic. They are still there and are the source of a big problem. I have been noticing those little tiny butterfly like bugs flying around my house lately. We’ve been killing them left and right. I cleaned out every one of my cabinets and still did not find the source of the problem. It finally occurred to me a few days ago that the little critters must be coming from the attic through the heating vents. The only edible thing up there they I can think of are those silly old nuts. Oh how I wish we had had another week or two of snow back then so we could have cracked all and not just part of them! mom

Homeschoolers don’t break for snow. 🙂 We have been slow and steady doing more crafts and relaxing although I want to get out and go for a drive! We have been playing more computer games lately…. Longer bath times 🙂 It helps that Daddy’s been home all week. His work has shut down completely. I know he is going crazy being here all day. Hopefully , the rumor of another storm on Saturday is not true! I am not sure I will make it with out getting to the store soon. Come on Spring!!!!!

I’ve had a manny (male nanny) since the government closed this week, which I’ve loved! I’ve also tried some recipes in my new crock pot from the site your recommended. (Love the meatball soup you suggested)

We have tried your snow ice cream, can you believe that is the first time I have ever had it! It turned out great, we added oreo’s. We have played in the snow and made snow forts and lots of snowballs and now we are sick:( Hannah has 104 temp and the dr diagnosed it as a viral infection:( So I guess there will be a lot of chicken soup and movies. BTW I remember those nuts, there never seemed to be an end to them!!! Amanda Luhn

oh the nuts… i actually think i have a picture of you cracking nuts at the kitchen table. that picture of natalie is priceless! and the picture with ainsley and your comment on it made me laugh. i think i’ve gained five or so pounds being snowed in with everything i’ve been baking and cooking. i might have worked it off yesterday though with all of the shoveling. hold on to your sanity it will be over soon… although i did hear something about snow on monday. eeek!
    love you,
    katie

After they declared a “Snow Emergency,” I spent the last 48+ hours at Children’s taking care of “little hearts” with my CICU Family!

The highlight of my day was when the street in front of our house and the rest of the community streets were plowed. My son is a junior at Mississippi State University and he tells us that they are expecting two inches of snow there tomorrow! That doesn’t sound like much, but when it snows in Mississippi, it is a big deal!

OH MY! Grandma had to comment on the nut cracking! So glad daddy was home to play tag. I worry that you are alone so much Leighann, so glad that Henry was forced to stay home with you. 🙂

I am truly jealous of the snow you are getting! Although we had an ice storm a few years back that was fun for about 3 days and that got tedious after that, I am still jealous of your forced confinement! Hang in there and stay warm!
