I remember the first few days after the doctors told us Ryan would die thinking no one should have to lose a child. It made me think of mothers in places like Haiti, Ethiopia…. Sierra Leone. Mothers who have nothing to feed their children. Mothers who cook stone soup. A soup that is literally water and rocks to give children the illusion something is cooking. A soup that is always cooking and never served. Soup mothers tell children will be done soon, but hope their children fall asleep before asking for it again.
It made me think of mud cookies in Haiti which are made out of exactly what they are named after. Cookies made to fill bellies, but not to nourish them.
No one should have to put stone soup or mud cookies on their menu for the week. But what would you do if you had nothing else to serve?
Jody, who challenged us to think beyond ourselves and get involved with the organization Charity: Water is asking for our help again. This time it is for vitamins. Vitamins for children she personally visited with an organization called Word Made Flesh (don’t you just puffy heart love that name?) in Sierra Leone this year.
Vitamins for children whose only protein is a hard-boiled egg given to them weekly by Word Made Flesh. WMF is also trying to give the children vitamins. And they’d like our help.
Jody is collecting vitamins until Mid-October, but please send them now. Send them immediately before you start making your dinner plans for your own children. Send them now before you go grab a coke from the fridge and cookie from the pantry.
Send them now so Jody can overwhelm Word Made Flesh with the response of parents in parts of the world where stone soup and mud cookies are pretend and not reality.
Send them now because no one should have to lose a child… to a heart defect, to cancer, and least of all to something as solvable as starvation.
