With all the talk about the girls, Ryan wanted to make sure we didn’t forget about him. So he showed off during his PT this week…
Yep, that’s my boy standing against a cabinet for support. And reading a book. I bet he has a good future in walking and chewing gum at the same time!
He had heart clinic this week. Dr. D says we can start weaning down on the oxygen – trying trials where Ryan is off oxygen for parts of the day. We start these next week.
She also said Ryan doesn’t have to have a heart cath until after his second birthday… so after February. We don’t have to come back to clinic until March, probably right around the time of the cath.
She also said ‘the guys’ – that would be plastics and general surgery – keep asking her when they can reconstruct his chest. She told them, and I agree, we will wait to see if Ryan’s missing sternum is hindering his breathing. It seems he will be able to breathe and sat okay without a sternum. His sats are in the 80s and sometimes in the 90s now… totally normal for a Glenn patient. There is no reason to ‘fix’ Ryan’s chest unless it’s absolutely necessary. For now, he will remain as he is, chest-bone-less.
And as for his next heart surgery, the Fontan, she says it shouldn’t be necessary until he is at least 3 or 4 years old. She wants his lungs to be as big as possible and as recovered as possible from his long intubations last year. I am happy with this… he is stable and happy and progressing. I’d like to see that continue for as long as possible.
So on the eve of his 19th month mark, Ryan is doing great. Starting to take a little food by mouth (and when I say little, I mean like a teaspoon per sitting), crawling, sitting up by himself, pulling himself up to stand, and working on cruising.
That’s my boy!

Great news in so many ways! We’re continuing to pray for Ryan’s health and development. Great job “multi-tasking”, Ryan!
I can’t believe he’s standing! I got teary-eyed reading about both his accomplishments and the fact that he’s not facing surgery again for a while.
Glory to God!
Yay Ryan! He’s so adorable standing! PTL for all He has done!
I instantly smiled when I saw this pic of Ryan!! What a wonderful achievement! He is doing great! Love you all!

Ryan -YOU rock!!! What a wonderful sight to see your little boy standing….I can see you beaming all the way here in Ontario 🙂
Oh he looks so good…so big! I have a question though. Isn’t it bad for him not to have a sternum? What if he gets hit in the chest while playing or something? Will you have it reconstructed when he’s older? Just wondering!
So glad he’s doing so well! I will never forget that video of him “holding” his beating heart while sleeping like a little security blanket…he’s come a long way!
It has been a rough day, then I looked at the picture of Ryan standing and I was reminded of the BIG God we serve. I needed that reminder. So thrilled to read of all the good news. What a miracle that little boy is. Did he want applause when he stood?
MIRACLE
Ryan is an overwhelming miracle.
My spirit is humbled while it soars to see God’s grace as a living miracle named Ryan.
